what is S.W.I.F.T. and how could it effect international banking?

My understanding of s.w.i.f.t. is pretty metaphorical,any one have a clear cut explanation?

Answers

S.W.I.F.T. = "Society for Worldwide International Funds Transfers". It's an international bank clearinhouse, thus facilitating funds transfers from, say, the Bank of Japan to the Bank of England.

It's located in Brussels. It's basically one big computer installation, very high tech. Probably the most advanced in the world when it comes to issues like security, etc.

They set up an inter-bank Y2K testing mechanism, and have expressed concerns over the past few months that relatively few of their banking customers were taking advantage of that mechanism.
