Dislocation after surgery

greenspun.com : LUSENET : About Joints : One Thread

I'm a 54 year old man and had my left hip replaced about a year ago. Since then it has dislocated twice. The Orthopedist that reset it last implied that he has never had one of his hip replacements dislocate and that my plastic cup was perhaps more vertical than it should be. Anyone have advice for me?

Response to dislocation after surgery

Ron, this answer is well after your initial question - however, my 74 yr. father recently went through the same thing. His surgery was on 1/26/01 and it dislocated on 4/6/01 and again two days ago on 4/12/01. Twice....in less than a week! Dad is very cautious with everything he does since the surgery and both times all he was doing was getting out of his chair. I have never seen my father experience so much pain as he did with these two episodes! We haven't seen the Dr. as yet (for the most recent episode)however, after the 1st, we were informed that "Yes, disclocations can occur". The 1st time didn't seem to cause the Dr. much alarm, however, he did say that a 2nd time was definately not good and a 3rd would require surgery. (God forbid we would have to go throught that many!) Each time it dislocates, it tears the muscles around the prosthesis and they become harder to heal and repair. I just found a website that explains a recall problem with a specific hip implant - you may want to check it out. Try these two: www.sulzerlitigation.com and www.sulzer-hip-replacement.com. Hope you find some answers.
