Remote phone system generators: Upgrade from 80 to 350 gallon tanks

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

My neighbor works at the SCAN telephone division for Washington state and he is in charge of the project. Seems to be a prudent measure. However, the Transportation Dept. is going to lift all moveable bridges at 11:45 pm, Dec 31, and only lower them if the power stays on. Otherwise, they are up in the air. This is a Coast Guard controlled right-of-way, since the moveable bridges cross a navigable waterway. So the Coast guard makes the rules. Could be an interesting New Year celebration, parked at a bridge approach. "I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles" The Who, 1968?

The upgrade tank is indeed a prudent measure. I hope that they are purchasing the fuel in a timely manner. A 350 gal tank with 80 gals of fuel is no better than a full 80 gal tank!

The bridge situation could make for an interesting return from a party...I guess that everyone will need to check their return routes before accepting party invitations.

Nice catch Jim.

Having spent many many 24 hrs in Oly, I can appreciate the *levity* of the post. More gov.con huh?

No, I'm not talking the bottled version of Oly, although I did spend a tour or two in the tap room in Tumwater. Even spent a weekend or two at Lakefair, as a kid. Hope you have all your ducks in a row, round 'bout the Rotunda. Ever been in the secret passage ways above the House or Senate? Really cool stuff! You're most likely safe from the blast wave emination from Seattle, but I wouldn't want to be in Takyroma.

What is the SCAN telephone division??

Sound like our local phone company in some ways.

The gensets have been in place for about a year. The fence around the genset and the big fuel tank are about six months old. The latest addition has been a dumpster parked in front of the gate and then chained to the fence posts.

Funny thing is that the only threat heard discussed about the phone company's generator is some local municipalities lusting for a genset "like the the phone company's" for their municipal water system pumps.

Hmmm.... No dial tone or no water, what might be preferred about day three of Year 2000?
