The Administration is of the opinion that we are or should be moving toward colonialism in regard to our food supply. This jives with what has become obvious to many resource users - that policy initiated by the executive is shaped to hasten the demise of domestic production of food and fiber. Ag is expendable.

One of our local 4-Hers was told by Mr. Gore that there would be no agricultural production in the United States in the future. Gore "Unveils" Plan For Agriculture - At a recent ceremony at the White House, current Vice-President and presidential candidate Al Gore let slip what many have long believed was his real intention as regards U.S. agriculture. While presenting a national award to a Colorado FFA member, Gore asked the student what his life plans were. Upon hearing that the FFA member wanted to continue on in production agriculture, Gore reportedly replied that the young person should develop other plans because "production agriculture is being shifted out of the U.S. to the third world." Gore was instrumental in the development of the United Nations "Agenda 2000", which calls for just such an outcome.

The vulnerability of this attitude is going to be clearly shown if Y2k slows international shipping. Y2k has every prospect of sinking the WTO, because each country will realize that security comes from self-dependence. You can expect countries to enact measures to strengthen their internal systems, whether technological or agricultural or whatever they have, and to make import/export secondary to their own security. That means tariffs coming back, and WTO becoming irrelevant.

Gore's statement, if that's what he said, will be laughable next year.

Nonetheless, half of a region in wilderness is a reasonable guess of what it will take to restore viable populations of large carnivores and natural disturbance regimes, assuming that most of the other 50 percent is managed intelligently as buffer zone. Eventually, a wilderness network would dominate a region...with human habitations being the islands. The native ecosystem and the collective needs of non-human species must take precedence over the needs and desires of humans."
