This forum has sunk to new low depths

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

As we get nearer to rollover more morons (you know who you are) are popping up on this forum, usually with annonymous handles as you (you know who you are) are too chickenshit to use you real e-mail id.

Now, if you see a post of mine and don't like my style, then please fuck off by.

If you start to read a post of mine and disagree with it, please, let's have some constructive criticism, not the sort of spiteful venom that I see below, as always from posters who contribute NOTHING to this forum.

The reason I and many regulars don't bother to post here any more is that you SUB-MORONIC types are taking over, and trashing what used to be the best forum on the net.

Congratulations.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

EXAMPLE RESPONSES

This is a fairly typical cross-section for me, and many other posters who are just trying to be constructive as we approach D-Day...

My dear Flint, Make me be quiet! I agree with sick. Andy........{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{SHUT THE FUCK UP.}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

sick:

I don't have any big problems with Andy spamming us with long cross postings. Give him a break. Not everyone is capable of original thoughts, so you need to be a bit more gentle.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), October 23, 1999.

#######WAY TO GO FLINT - YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF#######

I say we all pitch in and get Andy a little Y2K gift....let's get him LAID!

-- Sheryl (pimp@soho.com), October 18, 1999. Very obtuse, Cut $ Paste. BTW, Gold at 306 an' goin' no-where! Bit like you, CP? Admit it man. You've stuffed up. Again.

And it goes on and on and on.

That's why the old-timers have left this forum, never to return.

Andy:

I wouldn't let it get to me if I were you. Nastiness is usually the retort of a clueless idiot who disagrees with you. See it for what it is. A moron who can't intelligently discuss the subject. I hope that you don't treat them like that, or else you would be guilty of the same, IMHO.

-- haha (haha@haha.com), October 24, 1999.

I'm no saint but enough is enough. these imbeciles have driven a lot of good folks away. Read the archives from the early days and you will see what I mean...

Chalk and cheese mr annonymous ha ha ha

Andy, I understand your sentiment but we all need to lighten up and have a sense of humor.

-- I Am A Chicken For (Using@Fake.Name), October 24, 1999.

Andy:

I couldn't agree with you more! I have been "lurking" on this forum for almost 2 years. At that time, the information and contributors to this forum were both helpful and knowledgable. It was this forum that enabled me to organize my preps (and my head) for Y2K. But lately there is more useless information, more head-butting and flaming, it's almost impossible to search through the threads and find anything relevant to Y2K. I too have noticed that the "oldtimers" have disappeared one by one and I, for one, sorely miss their contributions. I am weary of the sophmoric, prepubescent, and egotistical postings here. It does seem irrational for someone to come to this forum if they truly believe in the BITR theory. Write us off as "weird" and go on with your lives. Too often I see retorts that blast the individual rather than contribute a coherent, informative, and enlightening rebuttal. What a waste of everyone's time!!!

-- Morrighan (matotipi@worldpath.net), October 24, 1999.

To say that there is polarity on this forum is a masterful understatement. Yes, this portion of the forum has an exceedingly high chaff to wheat ratio. Thank heavens for http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a.tcl?topic=TimeBomb%202000%20%2 8Y2000%29%20Preparation%20Forum

Anyway, as the "professor" in Red Alert says, "Time will tell, time will tell." Or as Robert Heinlein said, "Time wounds all heels."

-- Ken Seger (kenseger@earthlink.net), October 24, 1999.

I agree Andy. These guys are too scared to use their real names and e-mail addresses. They are too scared to use their real home phone numbers. They are too scared to post their home addresses. And don't even think about trying to get them to post their opinions. A bunch of spineless jellyfish if you ask me.

-- Butt Nugget (catsbutt@umailme.com), October 24, 1999.

Many of the oldies are still here, posting under different aliases. When/if some dramatic Y2K "news" or accidents happen before Rollover, they'll post more. This is the Intermission before Interruption.

-- Ashton & Leska in Cascadia (allaha@earthlink.net), October 24, 1999.

Andy, I agree but hey! they wanted to take up a collection to get you laid, buddy.

I am sorry, I just could not resist. Atleast you know where to send the F-U note...

-- Michael Erskine (osiris@urbanna.net), October 24, 1999.

Andy, I agree with you. I grow weary of those type of posts and I just click them and go on to something else. There's not much you can do about it except don't respond to them.

-- bardou (bardou@baloney.com), October 24, 1999.

When I wrote that the forum was dying, I was referring to the same degradation of signal to noise ratio that Andy is.

But Andy, as a couple of suggestions for improving the situation a bit: First, provide links rather than huge cross posts. They work just as well. And Second, your constant effort to find derogatory names for anyone you disagree with may amuse those who agree with you, but prevents you from making any converts. Ease back a bit, OK?

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), October 24, 1999.

I agree with Ashton and Leska. I am a relative newbie to this forum, but now we wait. I just returned from a two week hiking vacation in the southwest, sans PC, naively hoping things would be magically better. One night in Taos I could not sleep and ended up watching C- Span for several hours on Y2K International Preparedness (or lack thereof). Now I feel like I am seven months pregnant with little to do but wait.

What is important about this period are the literate posts that come through the chaff and provide insight, updates, and what appears to be insider views on finances, oil, international issues, and all the "fun" things that could add impact such as solar flares.

I, too, get a little disgusted at the Animal House crap, but there aren't too many other places to log in and see what is happening. I suspect some of the people who went out on a long limb a couple of years ago on this issue have a lot to do--even though it is too late to work miracles.

-- Nancy (wellsnl@hotmail.com), October 24, 1999.

uh, DUH! Cancel the 911 call Flint, the forum ain't dying. We've had the same type of trolls and obnoxious behavior since day one.

Get a grip folks.

-- a (a@a.a), October 24, 1999.

Andy and Butt Nuggett--what are you stalkers or something (maybe government agents-haha)? why does it matter to you whether someone posts their real identity? geesh, how stupid.

sort of like the guy (can't remember where) who was part of a chat room that regularly met on line. years back he had killed his young daughter by setting his house on fire. well the idiot fessed up eventually to his chat room buddies that he had done it. the most amazing events then happened. some of the chat room buddies said that he had shared this info with only them and so they had to honor the confidence of the group and not rat on him. others felt that he was basically a nice person (yet no one had ever met in person) and "made a mistake" so no one should tell. lastly a few members (who were in their right mind) went to the police. and guess what--the guy got convicted and the ratters were exiled from the group because they told.

moral of the story--internet communities are NOT real life; they are NOT immune from the laws and customs of real life; and finally; there is nothing anonymous about the internet and anything you share on line could impact your real life. that is why you DON'T GIVE OUT YOUR PERSONAL INFO TO ANY WHACKO WHO HAPPENS TO BE ON LINE. NOR IF YOU ARE A WHACKO--IS IT YOUR RIGHT TO INTRUDE ON THE LIVES OF PEOPLE YOU ENCOUNTER ON THE WEB WHEN THEY HAVEN'T INVITED YOU TO.

so get a life.

-- tt (cuddluppy@madeupemail.com), October 24, 1999.

It is the lot of life that if you stick up like a nail you will get hammered down. So who is at fault, the nail or the hammer doing what comes naturally?

I think that old timers of the forum figure the die is set, any influence is going to be minimal, we are now on the path down the yellow brick road waiting to find out what the witch has in store for us.

-- Brian (imager@home.com), October 24, 1999.

It's true the forum is passing through another period of near trollish uselessness. Remains to be seen whether this is terminal. Everything Net-ish has its life cycle, though Flint, like a vampire, still rises when the sun goes down to post 500 times a day. As long as there is a new audience to bore with his indecisiveness, he'll keep at it. At least he has religious fervor to spare about evolution -- this renews my faith in human nature, though not about evolution.

Otherwise, agree with Brian on both counts.

Rehashing the same arguments at this point with pollies is a waste of time better spent preparing, spiritually and physically. Plenty of time for posting near- and post-rollover, providing the Net stays up.

Oops. I forgot. We ARE near rollover, aren't we?

-- BigDog (BigDog@duffer.com), October 24, 1999.

"Low" depths? did I miss the high depths?

But I concur. Signal here is losing ground to noise. I skip a lot more posts than I used to.

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.cum), October 24, 1999.

I couldn't agree with you Andy on many of your posts. But, let me say this. If we cant speak our minds on this forum, then we need to find a way to fix it. I've dedicated myself to easing your burdens and now I have established a commission for the protection of our posts from such abuses. I'll be sharing my thoughts with the commission chairman soon and you'll be the ones to benefit directly from our efforts on your behalf. Together we can look forward to a brighter day. Thank you.

-- The Boss (bclinton@whitehouse.guv), October 24, 1999.

If the posters who have contributed so much to the discourse of this forum are to stop posting, then the detractors have won. Is this what you all want? Take heart Andy. There are people out here who read the posts and gain something from them yet never respond. Often when people agree with someone or something they say nothing, but let there be a difference of opinion and you may have to run for cover.

-- John F. (millenniumadrenaline@hotmail.com), October 24, 1999.

Be still my heart. KOS, you must be having a senior moment. I think we have already discussed this. Honey, If I decide I'm interested, I promise to show up with a pail of earth, jug of water, and a plastic sheet.

-- Nancy (wellsnl@hotmail.com), October 24, 1999.

Andy- I've been lurkin' for over a year, posted twice. If you subscribe to the theory that if you've helped only one person to prepare, you've made a difference, then take heart, you have. I follow all of your posts, and all the regulars. I skip over the idiots. You are all appreciated more than you realize. (Hey- I should know, I live on a 21 sq. mi. rock in the middle of the Atlantic. How would you like to prep under those circumstances?) Anyway, I for one would miss the this forum if you & the regulars decided that the morons have won. All the best,& may God bless.

still lurkin' in Bermuda ( BTW...My real name is Walter)

-- On de Rock (bpest@northrock.bm), October 24, 1999.

I don't believe there is much evidence that Trolls & flamers have driven regulars away.

I think it more likely that some of those "regulars" have relocated to rural retreats(without internet conection as yet?) or realise that thwe time for talk is over and are just "getting on with it"...

-- matt (matt@somewhere.nz), October 24, 1999.

KOS, you always catch me by surprise and make me laugh. Thank you.

Andy, even though I may not always agree with your technique, I enjoy your posts.

I usually skip over the 'children' who have nothing of substance to offer, in hopes of gleaning intelligent information. I'm hoping the regulars keep at it -- if it were for places like this forum (even in its basest moments) critical information would be unavailable. Lets not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

-- Casey DeFranco (caseyd@silcom.com), October 24, 1999.

Andy,

The moderators could correct this problem, if they would. A few concentrated days of super deleteme would frustrate the morons. Why do the moderators not try this approach?

Sincerely,

-- Uhmm.. (jfcp81a@prodigy.com), October 24, 1999.

Andy, don't despair! True, there is a lot of stupidity and childish behavior on this site, but there are good people, too. I mostly lurk- rarely comment on things, but would like you to know that if a thread has your signature, I always read it. I especially like to read your posts on gold, even tho I don't always understand them. And I'm glad you DON'T always use links....as long as I'm reading the post, I'd just as soon not leave the site for a link. I missed your posting, for awhile...guess you're using a different "handle", now.

-- Jo Ann (MaJo@Michiana.com), October 24, 1999.

"The reason I and many regulars don't bother to post here any more.."

Andy, last time I checked, you are STILL POSTING!

Quit crying like a baby to your mommy and look past it you insecure wimp. If you start to read something ignorant then skip it and read the next.

Now was that too difficult?

-- Jack (mercer@usa.net), October 24, 1999.

Actually, I don't think there are as many as earlier this year. Many of the pollys are getting scared and starting to go shopping.

If you can't outwit them, ignore them. Simple as that.

-- @ (@@@.@), October 24, 1999.

Andy,

Piss up a rope me lad.

-- 8 (8@8.com), October 24, 1999.

Sour grapes?

You think this is bad? This is nothing. Wait until after the non-events of 000101. Wait until you attempt to tell anyone that ever gave you one second's credibility regarding your precious disastrous predictions of dire outcomes and power outages and stock market crashes and starving hoardes and consumption of spit-roasted debate opponents that the sky is blue - it is then you will realise the state of your reputation for the remainder of your life; and, perhaps you will understand one more interpretation of the term of endearment: "doomer."

Andy, it could be they're mixing you up with that syphilitic bastard, Andy Ray, whom I believe might really be Wolverine. Andy Ray/Wolverine/whoever the hell you are, you suppurating pustulic excuse for a human being, kindly do piss off.

-- I'll (hide@too.com), October 24, 1999.

Compliments, compliments - how should I respond?

To be considered a menace to those you wish to embarass...sounds like victory to me.

To be called names by those disappointed by their embecilic support of the meme despite the evidence...it is a compliment.

I will leave; under one condition. I have repeatedly sought one shred of evidence to support the doomers claims. Meet all the criteria listed in either of my earlier posts; One System, or One Chip, With an Example - and you will hear nothing from me again - my word as a scientist.

Put up or shut up, silly doomers.

Amused Regards,
Andy Ray

Thanks Jo Ann - that's the reason I do it :)

Cray-brains like Flint wouldn't understand...

Andy Ray,

therein lies your problem, son. If ya' can't figure out when you've been insulted, how in tarnation are ya' gonna face any other reality? But don't you fret now, Andy Ray, you'll catch on eventually.

No Johnny,

That would be SAGGY rope, but not in my case of course :)

Any perceived similarity between myself and Andy Ray are entirely coincidental. I dont think we even inhabit the same continent. INVAR ??? Was that you ?? The insult sounds puffy enough. Have you been sniffing the shoe polish again ?

Well, whoever made the assertion, its yet another mile-wide-of-the- mark guess in the home of the mile-wide-of-the-mark-guessers.

Kind Regards

Wolverine,

Having read and appreciated your posts in the past, I took it as a compliment.

According to doomers, all who disagree must be one person posing as many aliases - their simply cannot be this much apathy/opposition to their well-thought-out "logic." It is symptomatic of their meme- tality, and sad really, that they think one or two people are behind all the pollies - or that we are all organised in some manner.

For what it's worth, my work demands a lot of travel, so at times we are on the same continent.

I have allowed the pride an prejudices of the doomers here run wild with guesses about who and where I am - they will be answered soon enough. I've not yet noticed anyone who got it right, though I've understood the European approximations (though they are incorrect). The truth, when they learn, will likely further damage their pride - but it will be nothing in comparison with the shame that awaits them from the friends and family whom they have harassed in the name of "caring." Please. If you really care, you will find out the truth and start correcting the meme now (though for some, now is even too late...).

Kind Regards,
Andy Ray
