Schwab trading site down Web site, phone system failures leave traders out in the cold October 22, 1999: 1:04 p.m. ET

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Charles Schwab Corp.'s online trading customers were unable to execute trades Friday morning due to a glitch in both the company's Web site and its automated phone system. The site failure marked the third consecutive day that Schwab (SCH), the No. 1 online and discount broker, has had problems with its online trading functions. A New York spokeswoman for Schwab told Reuters the company "had issues," but couldn't immediately provide details. Calls to the firm's San Francisco headquarters went unanswered. When the Web site crashes, Schwab customers typically can call the firm's brokers to trade stocks for the same $29.95 per trade that the firm charges for online trades. However, calls made by CNNfn to Schwab's automated phone system resulted in a recording that noted the computer for the phone system is unavailable. A system failure Wednesday paralyzed Schwab's Web site for more than two hours, just as the U.S. stock markets opened. On Thursday morning, some Schwab customers couldn't access their accounts through Internet providers America Online Inc. (AOL) and Microsoft Corp. 's (MSFT) Microsoft Network for 50 minutes, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday. Schwab shares rose 1-5/16 to 30-7/8 in midday trade. -- from staff and wire reports

And look the market is up, think of all that buying power that is left untapped by this "outage". Why the market should be up 20,000 points!
