Federal Way area wants to pay for extra police

Tuesday, October 19, 1999

By JACK HOPKINS SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

FEDERAL WAY -- This South King County suburb may become the first in the state to let residents of one neighborhood pay for added police service not offered to the rest of the city. Residents of the Twin Lakes neighborhood want to pay nearly $100,000 a year for three new police officers to patrol their 1,300-home community exclusively.

# Lets see, here are people of a community wanting extra service and telling the city that they will pay $75 per house for that service. Thought that the people of this state were selfish and didn't want to be taxed.

Federal Way Mayor Ron Gintz bristles at the suggestion that the agreement would mean rich residents will get better police coverage than poor residents. "There's nothing discriminatory or elitist about it."

# So when money is being offered to a city, even though it comes from the evil rich, it's okay.

Twin Lakes residents, however, don't have to apologize to anyone for their large homes and well-manicured lawns on winding streets and cul-de-sacs, some of which overlook a golf course

# Sorry for that last comment. Apparently their only evil rich when they want to keep their money, not give it to the city to pay for cops.

But Gintz still hopes things can be worked out. "I don't want to blithely walk away from a $96,000 infusion of money into the city just because somebody is saying it is elitist," he said.

# Never saw a politician walk away from a dime yet. Again sorry for the "evil rich" statement. These are good people because they want to give money to the city.

Now Ed, You know moeny isn't the answer to everything. Kind of like the idea that is being kicked around for people who would like to use the HOV lanes but don't want extra people in their car when they use em.

Pay a fee!! Buy a sticker!! Just like some of the other states are doing.

BTW have you been one the West Seattle Freeway (what a STUPID name for a long stretch of elevated SLOOOOOOOOW roadway)lately? One of the lanes on the eastbound side of that 'wagonpath' has been designated as a 'buses only' lane for about half a mile. Has no rhyme, no reason. It just starts out from nowhere and disappears just before an exit ramp so the people who used to travel in that lane because they knew they were going to use the exit. ARE FORCED TO MOVE ONE LANE TO THE LEFT and then cross over an extra lane when the exit comes up...
