Oakland releases Braille Y2K brochure [snip]

OAKLAND -- The Oakland Fire Services Agency-Office of Emergency Services has released a Y2K preparedness brochure in Braille.

The Oakland Lions Center for the Blind and the Center for Independent Living helped create the brochure, which provides information to people with impaired vision.

A spokeswoman says the booklet is consistent with a mandate for continuous community preparedness and its commitment to respond to the needs of the total community.

For a copy of the brochure, contact the OES at (510) 238-3938, Lions Center at (510) 450-1580 or Center for Independent Living at (510) 763-9999.

An admirable effort to be sure, but is this a case of the blind leading the blind?

Blinks are toast. Crips are toast. Blue hairs are toast. Forget them. Only the strong deserve to survive.

They're just "surplus population", aren't they?

...'Man,' said the Ghost, 'if man you be in heart, not adamant, forbear that wicked cant until you have discovered What the surplus is, and Where it is. Will you decide what men shall live, what men shall die? It may be, that in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man's child. Oh God! to hear the Insect on the leaf pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust.'

Scrooge bent before the Ghost's rebuke, and trembling cast his eyes upon the ground...

Best hope that someone "strong" will be far more gracious to you than you seem to be to others.

Mac, that was written in irony. I AM a crip.

Oh, Diane, this struck me with unbearable sadness! We think of who might be in need, but this is one group I hadn't thought of. When I took my elderly neighbor for her too-sparse preps, I ended up telling her that if she couldn't get to her daughter's house an hour's drive away come Y2K, I would take her in. The blind are at an even more serious disadvantage in doing preps. Who on earth will help them???

My sincere apologies. I've seen so many cretins posting about their own "fitness to survive" that I missed the irony. Sorry.
