where did $30 come from?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : I-695 Thirty Dollar License Tab Initiative : One Thread

I have been waiting for some time, but no one can give me an answer. Where did $30 come from. If you wanted to really make a statement, why not get rid of the MVET? Did you just say, They need some money, how about $30? Did you flip a coin, play guess what number I'm thinking of, throw darts? Any answer would be nice.

This has been discussed at lenght

The question seems to have been discussed at length, but not actually answered. I've been curious about that $30 figure myself. Where did it come from? How was it calculated? I think it's a relevant question because the answer would say something one way or another about how much thought (and what kind) has been put into this initiative. If its proponents cannot answer this straightforward question, it doesn't really instill confidence in those of us who are trying to get enough info for an informed decision.

"If its proponents cannot answer this straightforward question, it doesn't really instill confidence in those of us who are trying to get enough info for an informed decision. " Informed decision? You be trying mind games to justify yor no vote. People ain't lissen to no mind games, bryan-boy. You first tell me why my 2.2% and not 2.3 or 2.1? Hey! Great idea- lets make it 0%. Nice round numbah! Easy to remembah! Make for easy calculations.........

Gee zowi,

Still no answer huh?

frankly

Have you harassed your elected representatives this much over how they came up with the value of cars to charge for the MVET or what percentage to charge? I doubt it. Whats wrong with $30 dollars? It seemed to sound like a nice round number for the more than 500,000 people who signed the petition.

Is your beef with the authors of the initiative or the people who signed and support it? Maybe both. Fine, but quit nitpicking on $30. It was chosen as a value that was thought to be able to attract statewide support, which it has.

So next year you start an initiative to lower it to ZERO, or what ever amount you think it should be. If its lower, Ill sign it.

Ed frankly I dont give a damn that it will be $30. what I give a damn about is that the government will have less of my money

-- Ed (ed_bridges@yahoo.com), October 18, 1999.

From Eyman himself during a debate in Spokane with former Gov. Lowery, they picked that number because thats closet to what our neihbors have for their tabs. God honest I heard myself. reminds me of what my Mom used to say " If your friends jumped off a bridge would you do the same?"

-- Ken (klemay@amouse.net), October 18, 1999.

Still Waiting!!...

I've had several people, both pro- and anti-695, ask me:

"Why $30?"

I did not have an answer, so I just told them what Eyeman said:

"good for other states, good for WA."

.. but for some reason, this answer never seemed to work for them.

Please give me a well thought-out (I know I'm asking alot) response for this simple question so that I might enlighten others to the obvious logic of 695.

-- Wild Bill (colt45@yahoo.com), October 18, 1999.

Wild Bill

You have the answer so shut up already okay. If your so concerned about how $30 was picked why dont you ask the other states why they picked their fees.

So it will be $30. This is in line with our neighboring states. Whats wrong with that for an answer? Two short for you to understand.

Ed jeez, get a life and new tune wild bill

-- Ed "a lot more brain power then Wild Bill" (ed_bridges@yahoo.com), October 18, 1999.

"Still no answer huh? " You been given MY answer. $0 is more better. Will vote "yes" this year on $30, since it's too late to qualify $0 MVET initiative. Come back for last $30 with initiative next year.

-- (zowie@hotmail.com), October 18, 1999.

Ed- Okay, now I get it. The economies, tax structures, and public interests of our "neighboring states" are EXACTLY like ours...so logic dictates that I-695 should be DIRECTLY MODELLED after their initiatives. Thanks for setting me straight on that, smart guy.

Because, after all, Wahington is EXACTLY the same as Colorado, Oregon, etc...

Because isn't it true that Colorado's entire western boarder is the Pacific Ocean?...

And isn't it also true that Oregon has GIANT computer and aerospace companies.

Gee, and I havent even started with the Governmental, Tax System or Transportation simlarities yet..

Find me a better answer "Special" Ed

(But please take Geography and Economics 101 first)

Dear Wild Bill/Chez/Liberal what ever you name is

I never once in my reply said that the State of Washington was like the surrounding states, colt. Or that Washington has the same tax structure as those states. What I did say and very clearly at that was this would bring our license fee in line with the neighboring states.

You obviously have no idea of what you speak of because as soon as some one calls you on your so called fact you start name calling like the rest of the liberal crowd.

And if you are Chez, I'm still waiting for a chance to meet you and discuss the matter of your threat towards me.. You have my e-mail, so if your man or woman enough write me.

You apparently don't want an answer to your question, you only want to start an argument.

I will not reply to any further of your inane questions

Ed - hoping Wild Chez will use his 45 for the good of the site and put himself out of our misery

-- Ed (ed_brigdes@yahoo.com), October 18, 1999.

Special Ed--

"What I did say is that this would bring our license fee in line with other states"

Oh Ed, THAT WAS PRECISELY MY POINT!

Applying the transportation budget and tax structure of another state with that of WA's, (i.e.- "bringing our lincense fee in line with the other states.) IS LIKE APPLYING AN APPLE-STEM TO AN ORANGE!!!

...or like applying an Ed with a logical answer to our question.

Eternally waiting for one

"Eternally waiting for one " One will be there for you, on November 2.

Zowie-

I'll take that as "still no answer"

Judges? (Buzzer)

Oh, I'm sorry Zowie...

Let us know about the fabulous prizes for our departing guests, Chuck

Okay Zowie, Special Ed, Craig, etc.

Once more: Explain to me (and the others who have asked me), the logic of applying the license fee ($30) of one neighboring state to that of our own.

And no, I'm sorry Craig, "Chaff and Flares" is not an explaination.

Okay everyone (except the Spellmeister)--

Once more: Explain to me (and the others who have asked), the logic of applying the license fee ($30) of one neighboring state to that of our own.

C'mon Ed, Zowie, and others (except criag),

I'm daring you to show some intelligence, so now's your chance.

-- Wild Bill (colt45@yahoo.com), October 20, 1999.

40 oz--"Once more: Explain to me (and the others who have asked), the logic of applying the license fee ($30) of one neighboring state to that of our own."

At a minor level, because it motivates generally law-abiding people to find ways to evade what they consider to be an unfair law (compared to surrounding states). That being said, I think this is a fairly minor justification.

Now it's your turn, for the purpose of the question you may presume I've conceded the number is pulled out of a hat, why we should I *care*? IOW, where Craig employs "chaff and flares," I'll just call it what it is--a red herring.

Similarly, perhaps you can explain to me why our tabs should be *significantly* higher than surrounding states when we already have a higher than average sales tax.

Since you ask, I've decided to buy into the Spellmeister's argument:

The reason over 511,000 signatures where collected is because the people were lied to. My own sister signed up and she uses the Ferry everyday, after studing the impacts and facts of I-695, little things that I guess people who just want $30 tabs for thier cars aren't telling ya, First its the road people, kinda have to have it to drive, and the bus service, kinda have to have it to keep congestion down so we can drive our cars and not have as many on the road.. Heres a good one for ya, You can have FREE tabs, don't own a car, take the bus TIM, no insurance either, Save all that cash Tim.. Your a citizen with an Idea Tim, We all get ideas but we don't try to drag a whole state down when we get em... And I'm sure you'll think harder before you speak for the people again, because I'll remember you and a lot of other people will to pass or fail...I'm making my bumper sticker now, hey freedom of speech, Bend over Tim I'm comin for ya....

-- theo (twatsan@hotmail.com), October 30, 1999.

Theo--Congratulations! You're only the second person from the no695 campaign who gets lumped into the same group as maddjak.

Now, back under your bridge.
