The October 1992 issue of "Railroad Model Craftsman" had an article that may provide some info. Also the book "Crossties over Saluda".

I cannot give you info to your specific request but I can tell you that I have had the unforgettable experience of riding an officer's car over the Saluda and remembering the railroad official tell me it was the steepest grade in the US. I was in my teens and was on the backend of a regular run of a Southern train headed toward Columbia, SC. At the time my father was a Terminal Superintendent with Southern in Knoxville, Tn. and we were headed to a Southern Railway resort in St. George, SC for a hunting shindig put on by the then President DW Brosnan. I will never forget the screeching careening down the grade and the hissing smoke from the rails looking out the back platform.

See the responses to R H Rowe's question about Saluda dated 6/10/99 under "Modeling". American Altavista published a video and booklet about SR on Saluda grade a few years back. It contains detailed maps. I had some correspondence with the author regarding modeling this region. I don't know if the book or video are still available, but I would be happy to photocopy some of the maps if you can provide an address. NOTE: my e-mail address will die when I retire at the end of March 2002. I hope to have a new address available by then at "warne@pacbell.net"
