I just got my wood stove and went to get pipe--do I have to have a damper?--having trouble finding one--what is it's purpose?

Yes you need a damper, but check the specs on the woodstove you bought, it might be built into the stove - ours is. If you don't have a damper you cannot control how hot the fire is burning and if you don't have a fire going, a lot of cold air will drop down the chimney into the house.
