Whatever Y2K problems arise, Koskinen maintains theyll hardly be catastrophic. However, he expects a number of isolated glitches to crop up on the Big Day.

Come Jan. 1st, you may find a small retailer who put off handling the problem and can no longer use his electronic cash registers or cant find his inventory, Koskinen says with a shrug. That business may even fail. But with more than 90 percent of Americans fully aware of this problem, ignorance cant be an excuse any more.

I am wondering what he means by "ignorance can't be an excuse anymore." If it's no big deal, what is there to be ignorant of?

Kinda difficult, in my opinion, to NOT be ignorant regarding something that is UNPREDICTABLE.

My wife made an interesting point the other night. Since I'm the Y2k pointperson in our family, she's borne the brunt of other aspects of maintaining a household -- the cleaning, mainly. She said to me, "I only know what I hear from you. I don't have time to read the paper. If I were a single mother, I'd have absolutely no time to spend on finding out about Y2k." And she's right. For Koskinen to say that 90% of the American public is fully aware about Y2k is an absolute lie. Children? The elderly? The poor? Single parents? I would say that 10%, at most, is "fully aware" about Y2k. What is Koskinen smoking?
