Hearing on International Preparedness

http://www.senate.gov/~y2k/hearings/991013/st991013dodd.htm

Quote:

"It worries me that there might exist a real humanitarian crisis should less developed nations find themselves in a compromising situation after the date transition. In fact, this past Sundays Washington Post reports that Paraguay is far behind in their Y2K remediation efforts and will not be ready on time. According to the story, Walter Schafer Paoli, the Paraguayan Year 2000 General, believes that his government may have to declare martial law in order to manage rioting crowds following a total technological breakdown in Paraguays infrastructure."

78 days and now they admit they are worried. Will they tell Joe Sixpack they are worried, sure, maybe on 1/1/2000.

Is this the same joke that was on c-span yesterday.

Once again My eyes see and my ears are hearing but I cant believe either.

Here we have two senators in a dark dank old government office (dirksens)building. Holding a conference with some experts on Y2K and the information they are getting is so outrageously negative, that one can only shudder. Example:---***we just discovered in Cairo a chlorine plant that could have released chlorine gas and killed 8 million people in cairo had we not ACCIDENTLY discovered the problem.

They then went on to discuss the severity of problem overseas, shipping, ports, banking and how everything was interconnected.

OK----Im looking at this and you know what Im thinking!!

Where is the press? where are the people?

It is beyond comprehension!!

It is totally - TOTALLY - unbelievable the way the Senate SubCommittee on the Year 2000 Technology Problem has been ignored by the press. I am in awe. I usually do not go for the bipartisan garbage that is spewed out so much but Bob Bennett and Chris Dodd have done an awesome job together. Anyone know if the hearing will be replayed on Cspan?

Accidents too likely. Shut down chemical and nuclear plants for CDC please.

Very alarming.

D.B.--

I was wondering about the major media myself this morning. I've had MSNBC on for hours at a time since the hearing and have heard nothing major about it. Lots of JonBinet...Hitler's bunker being dug up...Clinton throwing hissy fits...but NOTHING about some of the very disturbing points made at that sub-committee hearing.
