Emergency supplies
Stock a three-seven days supply of food and water for you and the members of your household.

nonperishable foods (canned, dehydrated, dry grains)
bottled water
for water security: a water purification system
an ample supply of prescription (up to a six-month supply) and nonprescription medications
flashlights and extra batteries
battery-operated radios and/or TVs
for energy security: a solar-powered battery recharger

Keep warm
In case there's a power outage, be sure to have:

extra blankets
coats, hats and gloves
firewood
alternative heating devices - must be approved for indoor use and be listed with Underwriters Laboratories (UL)

CAUTION:
Don't use gas-fueled appliances (like an oven), or wood-burning or liquid-fueled heating devices that are not designed to be used inside your home. If you have a camp stove and heaters, you should only use them outdoors, in a well-ventilated area.

Extra cash Several leading Y2K preparedness authorities advise that you have extra cash on hand (from a few days to as much as a month's income) depending on your individual needs. This is just a suggestion, in case electronic transactions involving ATM cards, bank and credit cards cannot be processed.

What to check outside your home
Gasoline Keep your automobile, truck or motorcycle gas tank more than half full.

Back-up cooking devices
In case of power failures, plan to use alternative cooking devices in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Don't use open flames or charcoal grills indoors.

Portable generators
If you plan to use a portable generator, connect what you want to power directly to the generator; do not connect the generator to your home's electrical system. Also, be sure to keep a generator in a well-ventilated area, preferably outside or in a garage with the door open. Do not put a generator in your basement or anywhere inside your home.

Alternative shelter
In case of a prolonged power outage, you may have to relocate to a shelter for warmth and protection. This may be a community center, local church or social service organization

bill, how did you recieve the email? I work at HP and this info has not been sent to employees. Actually, no word whatsoever about what to do personally has been sent. We will be working ALL New Years weekend. All vacation has been cancelled from NOV98-MAR00. The folks working our y2k projects are VERY prepared (personally). That is what got my attention last year.

it's an HP newsgram... sent out every month or so with info on new products , upgrades etc. I think I signed up for the news letter when I redestered software .. not sure.
