A County That Gets It

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Every year, our local markets (southern Oregon/No. Calif.) have a canned food case sale. This year's began a little over a week ago. I hadn't heard on my order so I called today. The store manager at Price Less Foods said that they are getting two semis in a day of canned food to fill the orders. They cannot keep up with them and neither can the main wharehouse (in Oregon.) He commented to me, "I don't know if it is y2k, or what." He did say that they would keep going until all the orders were filled.

I find this phenomenon interesting and heartening. We are a remote rural area with very sparse population. Our county seat has less than 10,000 people.

Is there a "rowdy" type river running nearby?

I could be wrong, A, but I think he may be a little further south than "Rowdy River". I have tried to figure it out before and think he may be closer to Yreka. Or should that be Yikes!!!

marsh,

This may have some effect on what is happening.

We went shopping this evening and as we began our stroll down the canned vegetable aisle, we where totally taken aback by all of the empty shelves. Same thing in the cooking oil, literally all of the cooking oil where gone, as well as dry beans, canned meat, and oddly enough, the condiment, mustard?

Well, our first though was, naturally, y2k (of course I was racking my brain on why I should begin stocking mustard?). Well we asked the check out clerk, and she said they had stripped the store to supply the stores in the hurricane Floyd area.

We are in mountains of NC, so I can see why this would be, but the Food Lion home office and warehouse is in Salisbury, NC. Why would they not take the restock items from there, unless of course they already have? Gives me a start to think that this large, but localized disaster, could indeed be effecting the JIT supply lines in Oregon?

I guess the mustard, they are probably serving alot of hot dogs to the work crews.

I think in general folks in your part "get it" naturally. Of the eight families that I know in the area all but one have made at least a reasonable level of preps. Even my father-in- law in Fort Jones (well, up Scott River Rd a piece) has a stocked pantry, water, fuel and looks to be in pretty decent shape. They try and stay prepared for at least two weeks in case they get snowed in. I've been putting a word or two in his wife's ear and she's been building up their food stocks over the last year. I didn't get along too well with their daughter but I sure like her folks.

A few months back a Siskyou Sherrif did a Y2K talk for the area Hams. He went through the usual reports on the county, power, sanitation, etc. and told folks they should have the usual stuff on hand. Then he went on to explain that since the county was so big and they have so few sheriffs on duty it was prudent to have a firearm in your home for self protection in case craziness ensues. They expect there could be some home invasions by people from out of the area. Yep, the folks in your area got it.

Anything in particular in stock at PFL market that's a super deal? I've got to make an appearance at the office in Phoenix (OR), head up to Aggate Flat for a head shread and to drop off some fuel drums for the crew and then visit the in-laws in Fort Jones. Gotta drive right by the market to gas up at the Exxon/formerly Beacon (free coffee with every fill-up).

I haven't seen any shortages (food, fuel, etc.) yet but I'm doing my best to create some....DCK

South of an "R" River - Taz marked the spot. It is just about as far from the Carolinas as one can get. I don't think the rush is due to Floyd.

Yes, folks in our area "get it" by stocking every year in case they are snowbound, but not quite to the extent of the 3-6 months the county has suggested for y2k. Apparently from the canned food orders, they are "getting it" more than usual.

I was unaware of the suggestion for arming for self-defense. Most people here hunt, so they are well armed anyway. Even those that don't have at least one on hand in case they have to put down an injured animal from cougar or bear attack.

Wow,

The last time I was in that area I was metal detecting at an old fruit grower's camp out of Ft. Jones - my s.o. at the time spent many childhood months there while parents worked. Also met a very interesting (2nd oldest??) smoke jumper who built an "out of code" beautiful house on a mountain side a few miles from there. My, oh my... has it really been 6 years? Sigh.... I certainly fell in love with the valley and the Marble Mountains!
