REDMOND, Wash., Oct 8 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said on Friday he expects hundreds of companies to begin adopting "smart card" technology next year based on the newest and smallest version of the company's Windows operating system.

Microsoft will release its Windows Smart Cards Toolkit next month, executives of the software giant said, allowing developers to begin shipping Windows-based applications embedded on the credit card-sized devices.
