Will you remain on this Y2K forum until the rollover or will you gracefully exit before TSHTF?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

As you are well aware, many *famous* posters no longer post here.

Where are they now?

I don't know, but I do wonder about their current thoughts.

Do any of you plan to vacate this forum and stop visiting before Y2K?

I know that there are numerous personal problems which interfere with cyberspace continuity and prevent poignant postings from being transmitted into this wonderful forum.

Reality can be extremely harsh, and Internet sharing must be sometimes curtailed.

I have seen the exodus of numerous posters. They have stated they will not return, and their absences have been noted.

However, the most exciting weeks of this year are yet to come!

But previous posters won't be here to share their insights. :(

I know the regular posters, and I'm thankful that they will continue to provide their excellent insights.

How many of you are cognizant that geniuses post on this forum?

As you know, the Internet will soon experience a temporary crash.

Yes, there will be downtime.

Soon there will be MAJOR DOWNTIME with NO CONNECTIONS!

Y2K is systemic. A little here, a little there, and then the collapse initiates into a MAJOR NIGHTMARE OF CASCADING FAILURES.

You won't hear this warning from the US goverment. They do not want anyone to panic. Panic is anathema to general civility and the comfort zone of the pacified public masses.

Will you remain to post until the last syllable of recorded cyberspace?

I've lurked for two years. I've been military for three dacades. There has not been a single chatroom that I cared to contribute to until I found you people. Yes, I've seen genius on this forum. I've also seen dangerous people that "troll" doesn't fit, they are trolling for Alligator Gar! Possibly Gubmint. But I think I landed here through (don't get too literal here) divine direction, whatever the hell that is. I think I'll ride it out right here, thank ya'. I don't see any place better, "an' I been aroun'".

-- space (hooda@thunk.it), October 09, 1999.

I might get irritated at the quality of the posts from time to time and right now I am able to check in infrequently, but I will be visiting until the end one way or the other. I know I don't post often, but sometimes it is hard to keep up with the quality many of you do give and so I have nothing of value to add.

-- Beckie (sunshine_horses@yahoo.com), October 09, 1999.

for as long as it is possible to be here (and my expectations are not real high once we "cross the line" into 2000), here I shall be. I want to see how it all shakes out. The heartfelt posts. The valuable information. The absurdity. The insanity.

And if Y2K should turn out to be a bump ... the joy.

I plan to be here well into next year. But you just never know what's going to happen. <:)=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), October 09, 1999.

I consider visiting this forum akin to keeping my head to the ground; the information we find and share is invaluable. Many times news 'breaks' here first, and my local paper prints it (or not) several days later.

I'm "IN" for the duration.

I plan to continue to lurk....don't have a lot of info to offer, either, but have learned so much from so many of you! Sometimes the childish arguing turns me off, but that's what my rodent is for. On the other hand, I have gained so much knowledge from even the OT's. Not to mention some belly laughs from some of the bantering. I'd be lost without the forum and your company!

-- Jo Ann (MaJo@Michiana.com), October 09, 1999.

I'm leaving for Florida on Monday where my new computer is ready to roll. I will be shouting to my sister in the living room, "Hey, listen to this...." as I surf this forum.

Hey Porky et alia:

I e-mailed a response to David Butts about my personal encounter with a banking clerk this Saturday morning.

I was told that there was a $3000 withdrawal limit of cash per daily visit.

I was curious, and man, was I ever surprised at the response!

If Androgynous Person has a $10,000 deposit at my bank, then AP can NOT withdraw all of the funds on one day. No. AP must go back the next day and next and the next until AP's legally deposited funds can be removed.

This is a total scam! Fractional Reserve Lending is a fraud upon the American public and the rest of the world.

As of 9OCT99, a limitation of $3000 daily withdrawal is being enforced at my bank.

Soon there will be more restrictions.

Will the public become irritated or totally spooked?

I perceive that soon there will be armed guards at every bank to ensure that no frantic disturbances erupt. This will make the national and local news. Then people will become VERY concerned and plan to visit their local banking establishments.

And of course, they will be met with "new restrictions".

If you have much moola in your bank account, then I suggest you remove it while you can!

-- Randolph (dinosaur@williams-net.com), October 09, 1999.

Randolph,

Most banks, as far as I know, will allow you to take out a large amount, but you must give them a few days notice. They just don't have that much cash "on hand" on any given day. <:)=

I would never think of leaving this wonderful forum and all my friends. I've been a major lurker and very minor poster, but I am lurking day and night and feel close to all of you. I also am hoping we can have our New Year's party right here on this forum, safely at home, for as long as the electricity stays on. My hubby says I am addicted to this net and I'M PROUD! Ciggies, coffee and timebomb2000, I'm set. Anyway, I'm looking forward to mudwrestling with KOS and where would he ever find me if I bow out?

Well, I plan to tough it out as long as possible because this will definitely be THE source for Y2K info once we cross over into Y2K. I imagine that a number of folks (myself included) intend to relay what's going on in our own little corners of the world and I for one am exceptionally curious as to how this whole poker game is going to play out.

That guy threw in his $.02 worth, but it's in that damn fiat money... They called him--

Ahhhh, these people who make these big melodramatic exits, are just taking a page from "The Madonna Cincone Guide to Instant Celebrity". Leave em' at a high point, so they'll always remember you fondly. Call me a die-hard cynic, but I suspect a lot of these "absent friends" are back with a new name and a new IP, feeding their egos on all those, "Remember so and so? The forum just hasn't been of the same high quality since he/she left" comments. Of course I'm not talking about the ones who realize they're just getting too busy, to continue to participate regularly, and want to say proper goodbyes. I'm talking about those "Fare thee well! I shall never pass this way again" types. Uh huh...and I got a bridge and some swamp land to sell you.

As for me, unless I do just get too busy, I'm in. Call it masochism, but I love this place.

You folks should stop and witness yourself. I have actually laughed out loud, AGAIN! Thank you! As for you, Dieter, please spell my name correctly when you threaten me. I stand ready for the battle, or maybe sit ready. On a serious note, I hope you people are as confident of your position as I am. That is the mindset required of this situation. -- S.Pace (hood@thunk.it), October 10, 1999.

I'll definitely hang around to see what people report. For those who are in it for the long haul, it might be a good idea to give status reports here. The demographics and the geographic representation amongst the contributors here is quite diverse/broad; if you had folks representing their geographical areas (cities/parts of the state), we could possibly get a macro-level view of the situation.

If I see or experience anything and have the ability to do so, I'll probably be reporting from my neck 'o the woods.

-- Tim (pixmo@pixelquest.com), October 10, 1999.

Taz wouldn't be anywhere else...except that I will also be trying to keep my eye on the web site that has people reporting in from all over the world, plus the TV coverage with Peter Jennings as "IT' travels 'round the world. We will be on our generator but my 1997 Compaq is non compliant. So I will probably crash! Don't know. Thinking of getting a new computer, but don't trust the bastards that it will be compliant in all ways. Microheart still seems to be in a state of updating patches with more patches.

Taz:

I remember you stating in another thread that a hospital worker rolled your P.C. over and said it was compliant. I also remember you stating that you ran some software? and the result was non-compliance. Could you drop me an E-mail with some details on this? I hate to see anyone think about purchasing a new P.C. simply because their old one isn't compliant in some way. I think I can help you fix this one if I had more details.

Where would we be without Dieter?

I'll be here and into next year... if MIT and the net holds up... etc., etc. Think the global economic supply chain observations will be worth watching for.

Truly hoping the whole thing is a "5" or less... but I doubt it. There should have been way more "good news" that we felt we could trust by now. That does NOT bode well, IMHO.

Dang! I love starting the morning out with a grin, a giggle, and a cuppa coffee. Hey, Dieter,...I'm volunteering to be the first of a trio of girl backup singers for you. Could call us the dOoWAhS, as in Dieter and the dOoWAhs! A hit single off the first CD is at this moment coalescing (coagulating?) in my head, working title: "Go Gentle Baby, That Good Night? Hell No". We could have used the name "The Harlettes," but Bette beat us to it.

Oh yeah!

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), October 10, 1999.

Of course I'll be here! I sure hope there's a here to be. I have no faith whatsoever in my PC or ISP. So if you don't hear from me just imagine me quaffing some awesome organic cabernet with a bunch of musicians, hippies and artists under the redwoods and bright stars. I'll be with you in spirit if not in cyber space.

-- R (riversoma@aol.com), October 10, 1999.

Old Git, I'd be pleased and honored to doo-wah next to YOU. :-)

If the server stays up, the power stays on and the computer is compliant, I'll be right here. I expect this joint to continue to be the best source of information through and beyond the rollover. Wish I had more to offer than I have received around here.

My thanks to all,

I'm a FNG at this forum, been here a couple of weeks and I plan to spend my new years here and at Free Republic. There's still a lot of DGI's and DWGI's over there.

As long as the power holds out. BTW, can I run my computer off of an inverter / battery combination, or will the AC be too "dirty" to power my computer, tv and/or vcr correctly?

The inverter I have is a 300W and cost about 90 bucks.

-- ActionBill (actionbil@aol.com), October 10, 1999.

I might be running low profile towards the end, but I'll be here.

There might be just one response where I can make a difference in someone getting through this mess. I feel I'm obligated to share on this issue, be it rice and beans afterwards or information beforehand.

And who knows, if things aren't bad then we can have some rolicking good times poking at one another with "How much TP did you use today?" posts.

WW

-- Wildweasel (vtmldm@epix.net), October 10, 1999.

WW--wouldn't it be great if our posts next year are on the lines of, "how to make artificial flowers from toilet paper" and "dried bean mosaics for fun and profit"? Woo-hoo--flashback to the early 70s--I once saw this great mirror frame--plain, wide frame, with all kinds of pasta shapes and rice glued to it in tasteful (ha!) patterns and spray painted white. The shell types were particularly fetching. Hell, we can keep the preps forum going no matter whether a BITR or what.

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), October 10, 1999.

will be here...

Action bill- depends on your inverter- most computers need a modififed sine wave to function- also depends on the wattage your computer uses. I am off-grid and always use my computer with inverter/batteries- but my inverter is a $$$ Trace. You can always just try it out and see.

I'll be here as long as my ISP is up and going. We have alternate electric system with trace inverter, so will be able to use the computer. I do plan on checking in on the jrwhipple site - they have signed up people all around the globe to "report" on what is happening in their areas. Quite a few signed up for USA, Canada, and parts of Europe....wish there were more from Asia,Africa, etc.

Folks,

We all know this is all over soon.

So much melancholy--jees--you'd think it was the end of the world in a couple months.

Oh by the way---I talked to God last night. Well he talked to me. He said you would not believe me but thats ok.

He wants you all to Control your Panic. When others panic you don't. Breath relax--read some scripture. Just don't panic. You don't need too, its just going to be a little thinning out and down process. You now what he means--this internet has got to go(porn for every 6yr old)And now DSL service for everyone to be in everyone elses homes live and in color and this world government thing and the money changers and those that dont talk to him EVER. Slowly but surely the knees will be bowing! It will be better this way. Just look what the future holds if it continues our way.

From: Y2K, ` la Carte by Dancr (pic), near Monterey, California

I'll probably be here, unless I'm frantically doing some last minute preparation that I didn't manage to quite finish.

I'm reminded of the early days of AOL, before many people were using the World Wide Web or Internet Relay Chat. Every Monday night they would shut down for a couple hours to do regular maintenance. Whoever happened to be online at the time would talk until the last possible second. Conversation tended toward the melodramatic.

Even though very few of you have ever reacted to anything I have saidI feel as though I know quite a few of you. There is no place that I would rather be than here.

A towellette, hmm? Well, if OG and Donna are in, I wanna be there, too.

Love that picturesque speech, Dieter,...Moist Towelettes, indeed. Will you be wearing lame' (that's lam-ay)? I'm rather fond of those gold suits that Sha-na-na used to wear.

-- Donna (moment@pacbell.net), October 11, 1999.

How on earth could I leave when we are in the final act of a very serious, life-determining play??? I need to know the FACTS, the precious facts that we do not get in the national media, and which you all so diligently research, to determine my own course of action. And you have all become cyber-friends whom I have come to admire, care about terribly, and want to be in company with right to the wire.

-- Elaine Seavey (Gods1sheep@aol.com), October 11, 1999.

I shall be here. I've been around for some time, actually. Just recently decided to try "the light of day" [G]

Will be at home with my wife, daughter, son, his lady and her daughter, 5 cats, dog, chickens, rabbits, goats, pigs, and a bottle or two of wine.

And the wife's Crown Royal.

Hoping for LOTS of tearful laughter at our own expense in January and February.

First, I'm not known as a particularly graceful person. What I do, I do clumsily.

Second, I don't quit. I was the last one out the door at two companies that failed (wasn't my fault, either). After leaving my last duty station, on my way to being discharged, I evaluated some stuff for my superiors, and submitted my last report AFTER becoming a civilian again.

I'm real busy, I may not have time to read everything or post a lot, but I'll be here.
