My opinion...for what it's worth

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I think I'm starting to get a better picture now of what will happen before and after y2k. For so long now I've studied and worried, going from optimistic highs to gloomy lows. Exclamations of "good news" that have brought hope have always been followed by a lack of credible data to support same. And each new wave of "good news" has been more and more suspect.Of course , as it has been said by so many, we don't really know what exactly will happen. But, now, for the first time, from what I read between the lines and from reports from people I respect... I'm scared! I think there is a distinct discernment now among many that , yes, it really is comming and it's going to be bad. I think that many more people will very soon be getting nervous. I've always felt that as we neared within a couple of months of y2k that apprehension will ratchet up several notches.I personally can't see how financial disaster can be avoided y2k or no y2k. I believe that many people, including the president will soon recognize that we truly face the very real possibility of un-controllable events that will change the way we live (or die) I think these same people will soon start making subtle, and then not so subtle statements that perhaps this century change thing might in fact be serious. I think that they will make these pronouncements to hopefully protect themselves from the citizenry who will be enraged that people in responsible positions didn't warn them. I only wish I had acted on my fears and started to get ready sooner. I'm afraid that, against my common sense, I've listened to lies and political platitudes until it's too late. People will soon start to be aware of the dark, cloud drawing much closer and then the things we've speculated about will happen in such rapid succession that we will be stunned. I think Wall street collapse will be the first major event, followed immediatly with huge bank runs and total buyouts of super markets. Let's all pray that I'm way off base...

I have felt the same way. Each ray of optimism dashed on the rocks of reality. I recently talked with the person in charge of the Y2K Project for Arapahoe County in Denver, CO. I had spoken with her originally about a year and a half ago. Even though they've been working on it since early '97, she'd had lots of trouble getting the Management Officials to take it seriously. Their meetings with other counties had produced little action either, i.e. the other counties weren't doing anything. Yet, after spending $800,000.00, they announced Compliance this summer.

On 9/9/99, at 9:00 in the morning, their mainframe went down. She said the mainframe guys were all in there scratching their heads. It took them a week to get it going. Also, the PeopleSoft (don't know much about this myself) software said that three applications weren't compliant. She said that they were having to redo stuff they'd done a year ago, and doesn't think they'll make it. She's as worried as ever.

Yes, this is it. It's really almost here, after all this. I thought we were close at Day 477! I am scared too. I think about my preps and it doesn't seem like enough to get through what's coming. It's far different to think about it, and then have stepped through the door of now return!!! I will not be able to "rehearse" it anymore.

Citizen,

You're not alone, there are many people on this forum who completely understand how you feel. Take action! It's not too late. It really doesn't take a lot of time or money to get some real basic things you need. Make a list with the most important things given highest priority and get started. You'll feel less scared if you know you can take care of yourself.

Just be glad you started to figure it out before it was too late. I think most people who really spend some time studying the situation eventually get the picture, but the problem is most people just don't have the time to give it some serious thought.

I have a feeling you are correct that the stock market and the banks will be the triggers of panic by the masses very soon. It's hard to guess which will be first, but as soon as one happens, the other will immediately follow. You don't have time to be bummed out, just get yourself motivated to get ready! Good luck.

The Nightline story on biowar is almost the exact conclusion I have come to about what we are facing post y2k. The fact that the Govt has decided to air this is very chilling.

They are getting the masses ready for the y2k meltdown. It is not pretty. It is quite clear to me that our country is under a tremendous threat of terrorism. From whom that is the question. I think our leaders have done a good job of just about pissing off every adversary our nation has.

It had better figure out what needs to be done about it and deal with it. The people need to be kept properly informed and not B-S'd . I think what they showed on nightline has me very greatly concerned. If we cant figure out how to make diplomacy work it's time to fire the diplomats and hire one's who can get the job done. The idea here is to not kill the whole planet. The comprensive test ban treaty to stop nuclear test explosions is in danger of being canceled. We must fight to not let that happen. Once they start up again it will be bad news. Just say NO to leaving a F-up planet for our kids. Think before the brink. every thing we do counts for peace. Write every where It's time to care. Think Peace.

Yeah, I think we actually need to be a lot more concerned about anthrax than nukes right now. Y2K will give terrorists the perfect opportunity to fly over major cities spreading that stuff around and by the time we find out that it is in the air most will have already breathed it. If they just picked a few of the largest cities they could take out half our population in a few passes. What a way to die. People will be begging to be shot rather than suffer through that for days before dying. I don't think the government has any kind of biological agent sensors set up with the exception of probably some of the military bases.

The air is getting ominous. The media is getting more truthful all the time. It will be only a matter of time until the media reports the truth about the Republicans travelling back in time to program the y2k bug, all just to make the Democrats look bad.

Got more preps to do? Need to stretch your dollars? Think about getting together with other people and purchasing needed preps as a group. You might be able to get wholesale prices or better discounts.

I started a thread for this and listed some things that I'd like to get. Just add your own list of things to this thread and we'll try to figure things out.

I hope you're wrong too, Citizen. But the more I slog through the gov sites and , my gut tells me otherwise. We'll likely get to see the true colors of our leaders in the coming months. I don't think it's going to be a pretty sight. People are going to want answers.

-- Tim (pixmo@pixelquest.com), October 08, 1999.

Seems to me the "true colors of our leaders" are already pretty well apparent.

"It is quite clear to me that our country is under a tremendous threat of terrorism. From whom that is the question. I think our leaders have done a good job of just about pissing off every adversary our nation has. "

Boy, ain't that the truth. After doing an enormous amount of research, I started to understand why America has been villified throughout the world.

When the popular media discusses terrorist activities against the U.S., it doesn't explain why we are being targeted. We are lead to 'believe' it is due to 'radical religious beliefs'. I'd like to see a show of hands on how many of you still buy into that? Rally round the flag pole and nuke the lot of 'em, right? I'm sure.

It's time for the truth to come out. Religion is part of it, beliefs are another part of it, but what is at the nitty gritty of this threat? Any takers?

By not paying attention, and then doing nothing, U.S. citizens are complicit in our government's role in strongarming the rest of the world into a position they are fighting against.

Now, the question is, do we as a country deserved to be attacked? You need to go deep inside to answer that one.

At, At, At, At, At.......

I think the government is the "they" when it is said, "whoever they are". And being "they", they probably don't give a rip about biological agent sensors. Is depopulation "their" goal? Who knows, but it could be.

Citizen, I unfortunately don't believe you are too far off base.
