The Hungarian and I are yard-saling almost weekly now. Among last Saturday's prizes was a $1 book titled: "The New New Can-Opener Coobook, an oft-revised tome from 1951 to (at least) 1968. Turning the pages, I came across six pressed four-leaf clovers. Talk about a good omen! SIX good omens! Here are some recipes from the book--hope they're lucky for you.

Curried Crab Meat Amandine

2 tbs butter [or oil]

1 tbs curry powder

10.5 oz can chicken gravy (or make from package)

7 oz can crab meat, cut in chunks

can bean sprouts, drained

pkg salted almonds

Melt butter, add curry powder, stir 2 minutes. Add remainign ingredients, toss gently, heat on med, tossing gently ocasionally, about 10 mins. Serve over rice, noodles or canned potatoes. Serves 6.

Improved Canned Beef Stew

To a can of beef stew, add 1/2 tsp Kitchen Bouquet, min. 1-2 tbs red wine, 1/2-1 clove garlic (or dried equivalent), crushed, 1/2 tsp dried marjoram or oregano. Simmer 5 mins to blend flavors. Sprinkle chopped parsley on top if wished.

Pizza Hash

1 lb canned corned beef hash, chilled

1 cup shredded processed American cheese [substitute rehydrated F-D cheese or Cheez Whiz or nacho cheese sauce, etc.]

8 oz can tomato sauce

3 oz can chopped mushrooms

1/2 tsp garlic salt

1/2 tsp crushed oregano

2 tbs Parmesan cheese

Open chilled hash both ends, carefully push out contents. cut into 6 slices, arrange in baking dish. Sprinkle with American cheese, combine remaining ingredients, except Parmesan, and spoon over hask and cheese. Sprinkel with Parmesan, bake at 375 about 20 mjins, or until hash is well-heated, cheeses melted and sauce bubbly. [Can see this done over low heat in Dutch oven or skillet with lid.] 3 servings.

For a larger group:

Brunswick Stew

3 cans each of beef stew, chicken fricasse, tomatoes and succotash

Your choice of: 1.5 cups sherry and 1 tbs Worcestershire sauce OR 3 tbs Worcestershire OR 1.5 cups sherry and a few drops of Tabasco. If you desire a thicker stew, stir in dried potato flakes to taste.

[That's "WUH-stah-SHUH" sauce, by the way. Or "WUH-stah-SHEE-yuh", if you must. There are very few Rs in British English as she is spoken. Wanna have a go at Cholmondley? Hint: the first L, second O, N and D are silent.]

By the way, Old Git, I asked you this on another thread but you apparently didn't see it. What does the word git mean to Brits? We don't have that term here.

It means "geezer" ("geezette"?) as in those old buggers who forget the threads they posted on and so don't return to them. I think it started as a London (Cockney) expression. Andy gave me the nickname accidentally when I asked for a hotlink for an old duffer. Until then I was just plain Anon. And, yes, Chumley is right!

Wanna have a go at Beauchief? Beaulieu? (No fair if you've lived in England!) Okay, then, try this one (Welsh): Cymru.

Improved Canned Beef Stew

My recipe for Improved Canned Beef Stew includes adding a can of peas and a can of corn... Sprinkle shredded cheddar on top if wished.

[Oh, how I will miss cheese :-( ]

Bulk Cheddar cheese powder

Bulk cottage cheese, freeze dried

Bulk cream cheese powder

Bulk Mozzarella cheese, grated freeze dried
