How many months worth of cash are most GI's prepared for NOW?

Water, food and heat are what's most important. Cash isn't as important as the first three.

If I base it on a worst case scenario including the assumption that I won't have a job, I could hang out for 6 months with no worries. Like Linkmeister said, the goods are the most important part.

I think ya' gotta' consider that "getting it" lies across a continuum-- from "getting it" and preparing for something like 3 days, 2 weeks, or even 90 days at one end and preping for TEOTWAWKI at the other. Even at the TEOW end, yer gonna' have a continuum of preps there, too (I dare "say"). And I dare say that at most points along such a continuum of preparations, that the so-call inverted "Bell shaped curve" would be a fair statistical descriptor of how those who "get it" are stockpilin' cash. Extremes (zip cash on the left tail of the curve and ALL their cashola at the other end) at the tips, and all over the map between the extremes.

Personally, the number of months I am preparing for beyond 01/01/00 is ALL OF 'EM. . .

We are trying to be in a cash position as to cover our 'secured' debts for a period of 1 year, basically our mortgage. We could care less about any 'unsecured' debt. We expect 'deflation' to occur, at a time where our house devalues below our mortgage, we may decide to simply forfeit our house and take the remaining cash and buy something else, if possible, of course....

Don't hold cash. Buy the stuff you need, write a check. If we have problems, the cash won't be worth much. If we don't have problems from Y2k, all your cash withdrawals will be disastrous all by themselves.
