X-sync is 1/90 second with the built in flash or any other non Canon EX series flash. With a Canon EX series flash you can sync at any shutter speed available. You do start to lose considerable power when you go above X-sync though.

With a non-dedicated flash (Vivitar 283 etc.) it will sync to 1/125 sec before it starts to cut off the bottom of the frame. 1/200 if you can afford to loose a small portion at he bottom of the frame. Little known trick, and it's doubtful to be usefull since you loose TTL metering or auto fill flash.

You also should check the trigger voltage of non-dedicated units with a good volt meter. Canon specifies 6V or less, but any single digit reading shouldn't cause problems.
