Merits of safe deposit box at large jewelry company

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

They give an implied assurance that the box owner has the only keys (2). But, it seems to be an easy lock to destroy or to fabricate a key for it. Does this sound like paranoia or can I sleep easy?

Why don't you have a safe at home or hide your stuff somewhere in your home? I wouldn't sleep a wink knowing that a lock could be easily picked or a key easily fabricated. And, prove that you have what you have in the safe. And, how do you propose to get to your stuff if the jewelry company is closed and boarded up? Not very smart!

Commercial safe deposit boxes are swell-up to a point. What sort of insurance is there? Anything beyond Fire? Theft(and embezzlement)? Are you covered if you store cash-or a .357? Suppose you get run over by a truck? Who else has access? AKA Who do you trust? Will they release the contents to your wife/friend/executor without a Probate judge's authorization? The legalities are VERY different for commercial safe deposit/storage facilities. You don't have the protections of a bank safe deposit. Ask whether the police can inspect the contents without a court order. Will you be notified if they do? OTOH, you also have some freedoms not found at banks.

What do you want to keep there? Important paper records would probably be OK. But NOT gold, silver, or cash.

And WHY, class? Why would we not want to keep our gold, silver or cash in a safe deposit box? Does anyone know? Anyone???
