Where can I get dessicant packets?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

I need some sources for the dessicant packets you would put in with grains etc. I'm using dry ice for the buckets but need something small for quart jars. thanks.

Easiest way -- walk into your local WalMart, stroll back to the area where they have dried flowers, and look on the shelves for Silica Gel.

Take it home and put it into whatever size packet you want. Use a paper, not a plastsic envelope. Silica gel can be reused. It normally has a blue color, but when it absorbs moisture it turns pink. Simply bake it at 250 degrees until it turns blue again.

Having said that, a dessicant doesn't serve the same function as dry ice. Using dry ice removes oxygen from the bucket. Using a dessicant removes moisture, but not oxygen. If you want to remove oxygen, the packets you want are called.....are you ready for this?.....oxygen absorbers. You can get them at

For quart jars you would need a small sized absorber (300 cc is the smallest floating around the preparedness community.

Might also try Royco......don't have a URL for them.

Oh yes, in order for the oxygen absorbers to work there has to be some moisture in the air, so they don't work too well in conjunction with dessicants.

You can get dessicants at U-line:

http://www.uline.com

They get the stuff to you in three days MAX. Great service. They have all three type: silica gel, calcium chloride and clay.

Royco packaging is at:

Royco Packaging 3979 Mann Rd, Huntingdon Vly, PA 19006-1805 Phone: (215)322-8082

I use them for Oxy absorbers for personal and business use. Great service.

I pray this helps,

Got more preps to do? Need to stretch your dollars? Think about getting together with other people and purchasing needed preps as a group. You might be able to get wholesale prices or better discounts.

I started a thread for this and listed some things that I'd like to get. Just add your own list of things to this thread and we'll try to figure things out.
