Mexican Airports, Banks Ready For Millennium Bug

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican airports and airlines, as well as the banking system, are ready to cope with the Millennium problem, when computers may have trouble reading the start of 2000, officials said.

"We can say with certainty that today we are ready to guarantee the safe and efficient passage of people and planes through our airspace and our airports," Roberto Canovas, director of Mexico City's international airport, said Thursday.

Mexico has been ahead of many of its Latin American cousins in tackling the co-called Millennium bug.

"The real-time tests of navigation, air traffic control and ground and on-board communications systems of the airlines, which took place in July, was a complete success," said Juan Fernando Perdomo of the ASA airports administration agency.

In a separate statement, Perdomo added that all the country's airports had taken measures to ensure they were perfectly Millennium compliant.

He added that Mexican authorities had been in close contact with their counterparts in the United States and Canada, as well as international bodies, in order to coordinate precautions ahead of the New Year.

For their part, the country's bankers said recent tests to show their institutions' systems could cope with any problems had been 98 percent successful.

"The result of the tests was more than 98 percent successful. The 2 percent that wasn't had nothing to do with the year 2000," said the Mexican Bankers Association.

The ABM said in a report the tests were carried out by 95 percent of banks in the system and involved 90 percent of all banking operations.

By the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third week I had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than that on the lottery!!
