U.S. Treasury Warns: "around January 1, 2000, most computer software and hardware is at risk for error failure."

It just gets curiouser and curiouser...

Pay now or pay later

The government says not to worry, the majority of its computers will safely usher in the year 2000. Think again. We have obtained an industry circular from the Department of Treasury, warning proprietors of distilled spirits, wineries, tobacco-product manufacturers, and firearms and ammunition manufacturers, that "around January 1, 2000, most computer software and hardware is at risk for error failure." And consider this: Uncle Sam says people who pay excise taxes by electronic funds transfer "are subject to penalties and interest for any late payment of such taxes, and . . . the year 2000 (Y2K) may present obstacles that could cause tax payments to be late unless precautions are taken." "Taxpayers who pay by any type of electronic funds transfer are particularly at risk of incurring a late tax payment because of Y2K errors," Treasury warns.

But I thought the Government is the one that said "we're all in this together" and "we shouldn't sue anybody over this." As, usual the government will be the only one who can impose penalties. Sounds like a good New World Order to me.

Be sure to pay next years taxes early. Get those checks in the mail boys and girls. Avoid those possible late fees. You'll feel better for it. Won't have to worry about those little errors that may crop up.

["Think they bought it?" "Shhh... don't tell them the IRS and Treasury won't have a clue who owes what come the New Year." Shhhh]
