leather conditioner from tallow

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have heard of a recipe for leather conditioner that uses tallow as an ingredient. Any suggestions? D Schulz, Steamboat Springs CO

I have beed working leather since 1975. Seen alot of peolpe do alot of wrong stuff. Never use synthetic conditioner or waterproofer. They dry the leather and crack it. Any natural animal oil, applied at about body temp (95-100 degrees f.) will be much appreciated by your product. It may darken some when applied, but usually gives a rich, warm look when dry. Animal oil is the best because it will allow the leather to continue to breath. Warm is best because it absorbs better. Kinda like getting a massage.

What is Neatsfoot Oil? I was told that used hot it breaks down the leather making it quickly soft but permenantly weak. Truth or Myth?

Don't use hot oil. Oil should be applied at aroud body temp (95-100 degreesF) Also do not use it on the new manufactured bonded leather products,or on pig suede splits, or fashion garment leather. Oil interferes with the glue they use to stick the leather together. Most of the stuff at The Mall is not really "genuine leather". Oil is very good for any top grain leather product.
