Unfortunately for your friend, it is very late in the game. I have given up trying to help people like him who are to arrogant to accept anything that might be uncomfortable.

Many will not be ready. He will be amoung them. Tough shit for him.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. Sorry.

-- Gordon (gpconnolly@aol.com), September 29, 1999.

Slip over to their house and pull out the electric meter.

The next day feign surprise and ask them what they would do if it were January.

-- BB (peace2u@bellatlantic.net), September 29, 1999.

I suggest printing out a few selected articles from authoritative sources. From today:

Edmonton Sun (I believe) on the electric company that just bought $15,000 worth of food for Y2K... Ask him about the disconnect between what they are saying (they are prepared) and what they are doing (contingency plan). Ask why we shouldn't have a contingency plan. What is his contingency plan for no power? No water?

Scotland.net Article on Barracks turned into mortuary for millennium. Ask him what they know that we don't...

Wired News article "Japan Pays for Blase Y2K Plans." Ask him if he uses anything from Japan. Computer (or components), Stereo, Car, VCR, etc. Where will he get replacement parts?

You might also ask if he has auto insurance. Does he PLAN on being in an accident? A more personal question is how much does he pay for it for a year. Is his family worth that much? Then why not spend that much in disaster preparation?

-- Mad Monk (madmonk@hawaiian.net), September 29, 1999.

Nancy,

I read this about an hour ago and thought what a great article to give to a person who doesn't understand what could go wrong with the every day things in a persons life.

You may want to read it and see if it's what your looking for.

Nancy,

Go the the thread below and print it out for your DWGI. Good luck.

A rational explanation for making Y2K preparations http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=001RUO

The most effective statement I've read on a link from this forum is:

"Are you prepared to be wrong?"

Have him think about it. Ask him if he thinks he *knows* what's going to happen. If he admits that he is not God, he must admit to the possibility of being wrong. Therefore, with his current level of preparation, what might happen to him and his loved ones?

The same goes for those who go in for the other extreme: kill any prospect of continuing with their career, alienate friends permanently, buy a house beyond their means in a place they don't like - all just to feel Y2K-safe. Are they prepared to be wrong, should it really be a BITR?

My personal opinion, as some other wit said on this forum, is that the "bumps in the road" will be dead pollies.

-- Y2KGardener (gardens@bigisland.net), September 29, 1999.

Nancy, don't worry.

When Wall Street crashes, it will be the greatest Y2K prep alert of all time.

All studied arguments and statistical compilations will pale in effectiveness.

We will be astonished at the millions of newly born GIs.

-- Randolph (dinosaur@williams-net.com), September 29, 1999.

nancy,

This is the toughest time. Shindler time. Satisfy yourself that you've done what you can and be at peace.

-- Carlos (riffraff1@cybertime.net), September 29, 1999.

Randolph,

We will be astonished at the millions of newly born GIs.

Yeah, but they won't have any money left for preps.

-- de (delewis@XOUTinetone.net), September 29, 1999.

And they'll be too shell shocked to do anything.

-- de (delewis@XOUTinetone.net), September 29, 1999.

Carlos,

Shindler time. Well put... and sobering. Have we all been creating our own little Shindler's List, and then slowly crossing off names as we realize they don't care, don't believe, don't want to spend the time investigating the situation?

-- Ed Yourdon (HumptyDumptyY2K@yourdon.com), September 29, 1999.

IT'S TOOOOOO LATE! SH*T IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN! ARE YOU HUNGRY AND THIRSTY? GOT A COUPLE THOUSAND DOLLARS TO PREPARE FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS OF LIFE? DO YOU LIKE RICE AND BEANS? DO YOU LIVE IN GANGLAND ZONE? SORRRRRRRRYYYY THAT YOU DID NOT LISTENNNNNN TO MEEEEEE!

Just a reminder to all you GIs, check your stash from time to time especially for leaky water bottles. I found 5 1-gallon bottles that I stored 11/98 (I dated them), and they had tiny pinholes in them. Ants are out in full force storing food for the winter. Now isn't that special? A little tiny ant with a tiny, tiny brain, has enough common sense to store food for the winter! Squirrels too! Amazing!

-- bardou (bardou@baloney.com), September 29, 1999.

Nancy,

Ask him who knows what he requires to be comfortable (during trouble with the electric or gas in the winter), someone else or himself. If he says someone else, then so be it. If he says himself, then he has to get busy. No one knows a person's necessities better than that person him/herself, so it simply boils down to who you trust yourself and family with more, yourself or someone that doesn't know you and is already over burdened with others that have made a decision to trust someone else rather than themselves.

Good luck

me

Just to add to credibility, it is Schindler, if you are referring to Oskar Schindler recently made famous by Steven Spielberg. And Oskar behaved much more nobly then I am going to with people who refused to listen but show up begging. No philanthropy here.

-- schindler (schindler@list.com), September 29, 1999.

Explain the consequences of being prepared vs. not being prepared. I have been prepping for months and am comfortable, even if I am wrong. What is the consequence of having food? what is the consequence of having stored water? Firewood? Rechargable batteries and a simple dc motor turned generator? Not doing anything can invite disaster and doing alot is no harm done. If they can't see the simple logic in that, they will never get it. Pete

nancy,

It doesn't go much into the why of potential Y2K problems, but this recent article in an Atlanta newspaper is a basic guide to preparing "just in case" for two weeks:

Be prepared: A list of do's

By Marilyn Geewax

Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer

Washington -- Don't panic, but get prepared. While the nation's basic infrastructure will function after Jan. 1, authorities say the Y2K computer bug is sure to cause some problems. The power could go out in one community, while the water system falters in another and traffic lights malfunction in still another. Because no one can say with certainty which systems might fail, "the basic message we are giving people is ... be prepared for an emergency," said Red Cross spokeswoman Leslie Credit. Start your preparations by figuring out who is going to be in your household between Dec. 31 and mid-January, and what each person's special needs will be. Then lay out a strategy for making sure everyone can stay hydrated, healthy and warm for up to two weeks. These are among the recommendations being made by mainstream agencies:

Break into his house and urinate on his carpet. Ask him if he's getting the picture yet. If says he isn't, wallop him with a large, baton-sized Maglite flashlight you purchased earlier.

You could start with the Senate reports. We've got them all here. I gotta run, my mainframe is down! Maybe Linkmeister can post the links. Good luck!

Nancy, about your friend who JDGI. People in this position don't want to understand, nor do they want to research the issue. Most of us have been doing this for some time and it took a while for the magnitude of the possible outcomes to sink through our thick skulls. It's too glibe to say if your friend JDGI or won't to give up - but realize something about yourself here. There is a seperation taking place, often heard as wheat and chaff. Those that won't or don't are of course, chaff. There are no guarantees for the wheat either. If you have told your friend, cajoled, pleaded, and begged, enough already. I'm sure many of us have friends and family in this exact same position, I do and they JDGI. They don't want to. A strong delusion has been cast down and many will believe a lie. This is not the only lie that is being cast down - but it is a pretty big one. How can any of us mere mortals hope to contend with the Almighty who determines who will believe a lie and who won't? Scary stuff. We can try our best, but if they won't or don't - we are fighting against more the flesh and blood...

-- Ray (shusters@montanasky.net), September 30, 1999.

Nancy, I just spotted this article, only scanned it briefly, but you might want to share this with your friend:

http://www.gvtc.com/~jsearcy/colonel.htm

(I don't think much of "Col. Ammerman" (I have inside info), but the article may be helpful).

-- Ray (shusters@montanasky.net), September 30, 1999.

Hey, my husband refused and still refuses to understand a damn word about y2k. What we have is an unspoken compromise. He has our "habitat" defined as a "retirement home". That's ok. I'm going where I want to go. His nice cabin might be built before rainy season and it might not. I have a junk trailer in case. Call it one thing, but let it be another that he/she can fathom. Unfortunate, but hell, for these stakes, who cares? M

In this life the only thing you MUST do is die, everything else is choice.

-- zoobie (zoobiezoob@yahoo.com), September 30, 1999.

At this point, I look upon being a DGI, DWGI as a personal choice. The info has been widely available to those who would open their eyes to see it, or their ears to hear it. If they haven't gotten it by now- just wait awhile. They will- trust me.

Tell him it's not the odds; it's the stakes.

-- Pearlie Sweetcake (storestuff@home.now), September 30, 1999.

An effective opening line for your spiel could go something like..."Well. of course, the situation (i.e.y2k) is much worse than the government and media are letting on.." People tend to nod and agree with this easily and naturally, and it primes them for acceptance of further stuff you're going to tell them.

Think for a minute about the person you're trying to convince; try as best you can to understand what makes them tick. Explain why they should be motivated for y2k preps, but do so in terms that resonate with their regular motivating forces. Greed, conformity, lust?, self-esteem, recognition, altruism, duty, competitiveness, fear, anger, non-conformity, reasonableness, etc etc etc *; these are the "parts" of a person that you should try to appeal to when trying to pursuade.

good luck.

*ooops! i hate it when i psychoanalyze myself in public. Your target audience will have different characteristics, play on them.

Sorry - I'm a newcomer, but what is JDGI? I truly believe Y2K will have devastating effects, but I'm wondering if I'm missing something here. Have appreciated ALL the comments I've read -- pro or con. Am preparing!! (I'm the wife of leon!)
