Y2K COUNTDOWN TIMER VIRUS ALERT

Y2K COUNTDOWN TIMER VIRUS ALERT! This alert from Ross Stewart. A new and destructive (aren't they all) virus is circulating the Internet masquerading as a Y2K countdown timer, named Y2Kcount.exe. It is a Trojan virus called COUNT2K, and normally arrives as an e-mail purporting to come from Microsoft. The email has an attachment "Y2KCOUNT.EXE" of 124,885 bytes. DELETE THE ATTACHMENT, DO NOT EXECUTE IT. . IT IS A REAL NASTY. Further details have been posted on McAfee's Anti-virus Info Centre at http://vil.mcafee.com/vil/tro10358.asp and they also have removal/cleanup instructions, if you have been foolish enough to open such a thing without checking first. DELETE IT.

Note: Watch this page for a forthcoming article on what may be the real "gotcha" of Y2K early in 2000--malicious virus attacks! In the meantime, use precautions to reduce your risks of virus attacks. Remember that viruses are harmful only when opened. Receiving one as a file attachment in its self does not cause harm. My recommendation is that you always save attachments to your desktop or a work directory, even from known sources, then scan it with a robust virus scanner with a CURRENT signature file. Also set your Word applications to always ask before opening macros, then if asked respond with NO for any document not created by you or known to be free of viruses.
