Are the resturants really that bad there? or are they getting ready for something?

I bought a bunch of "self heating" meals for me and my loved ones as a supplement to my other preps (back in Jan). Bought and had em shipped straight from the factory to the house. UPS man was a bit curious...

Soooooo, my folks, in-laws, sisters & brothers go GI and decide that maybe they want to errr on the safe side too. I called the company to arrange an order to be shipped to them (back in April).

I asked the company fella are ya gettin busy? - Whoa nellie, he said they were bustin it to fill a big order for some organization called the NERC. Anyone heard of that organization? Anyone got generator?

PS. Flint, give your keyboard a break - I KNOW that these things occur all the time and it is likely not tied to Y2K.

Sheesh, Ralph,

You didn't say where to find this, and it's a good piece. Thought-provoking too. Where else is this going on, I wonder? I live in Mo. I like this.

I'm link-impaired, but here's the URL:

Hope you guys don't think those MREs are to feed the inhabitants of Kansas City!!! That stuff is for the US, military, national guard and UN troops who will be puttin' the boot to the inhabitants of KC !!!! Don't even think about gettin yer little paws on that delicious grub!

Sometime early this year or late last year I read a post on another board by a guy who claimed he lived in KC. He said his roommate was employed by some outfit to unload semi-trailers in salt mines around KC. He said they unloaded something like six or seven per day, and were planning on working for the next six weeks or more. They were, allegedly, unloading MREs and storing them underground.

Can't confirm his story. Just sounds familiar. Sometimes we crazies get strange ideas.

well...........

the link off gary north's page is not there

http://www.army.mil/army-y2k/ C3itest.htm

wonder what happened to it ; )

anybody have a more current link to this info?

-- andrea (mebsmebs@hotmail.com), September 27, 1999.

crackpot You have it right, I read that post many moons ago. I think Gary is using it for filler material during this momentary slow time before the storm. There was never much follow-up to the post.

-- tc (trashcan-man@webtv.net), September 27, 1999.

That story is at LEAST a year old and probably more. I first read that same story at...ta da...Gary North's!! This is no BS, I used to be a "floating" moderator on his forums. There was quite a bit of discussion over this "incident" but nobody was ever able to confirm this story, including people who live in the area. Several people confirmed that there are indeed "caves" all over the place underneath KC, but nobody could determine this MRE storage deal.

I couldn't help but notice that he placed it under the heading of "Martial Law"...stirring up that pot some more!!

* * * 19990927 Monday

Y'all are correct about the familiarity of this item. It's a repeat of a long long item, posted long long ago... AND NEVER CONFIRMED!!! To my knowledge!

I followed up on this item real tightly for a couple of weeks after it first posted!

Shrugged it off as bogus, until confirmed! (Just because it's long doesn't mean it's more true!)

I am also of the opinion that even if it were true, them {sic} rations will probably only see the insides of politicos and/or military bellies! Look at Russia, Indonesia, North Korea, Yugoslavia, Turkey, et al. Duh!

Still searchin' for CONFIRMATION!!!...

Regards, Bob Mangus

Seems to me that I saw this story on c.s.y2k maybe as early as last summer. If anybody cares.....do a deja search.

Well....

I can honestly tell you that KC is a terrific town for restaurants! Although prime KC Strips and barbeque are what many people think of if they've visited here, we've got plenty of variety. Competition is tough -- mediocre food just doesn't cut it. : )

I also heard the 'rumor' several months ago, of MRE's and other food products being stored in several of the limestone cave storage facilities here. Many people don't know this, but KC is a leader (may even be #1) in terms of the amount of underground storage available in the U.S. One of the largest underground storage 'complexes' is owned and operated by Hunt Midwest, as in the Hunt family from Texas. There are, however, several other large facilities, both on the Missouri and Kansas side.

One of these other facilities had a lingering fire several years ago, and much of what was stored in the facility was damaged. It took them quite a long time to bring the fire under control, and even longer to sort through the smoke damaged items stored there. Earlier this year, this facility supposedly 'went out of business', or was shut down. Didn't think anything about it at the time.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago.....I was driving home from an errand and happened onto a small convoy (4 vehicles) of 'Hummers' going down the road toward this supposedly non-operating underground cave. This particular facility is on the Kansas side. I debated on whether to just follow them and see where they went, because frankly, there isn't much of anything else except for that storage facility along this particular road. It doesn't take you anywhere, really, except to this place. (No, it's not a dead-end, but the chances of anyone using this road as a route to somewhere else are extremely remote. It would be a really convoluted way to get to anywhere except this place). I was already late meeting someone and had no way to let them know I would be even later, so I went on my way.

But...that evening, we took a little 'drive'...a 're-con' if you will, just to see what (if anything) we could see. Drove by the facility; didn't look necessarily abandoned (there were a few cars/pick-up trucks), but no 'official' looking vehicles, either. However, it did look to us like there were an awful lot of trailers parked real close to the entrance to the caves. Another thing we noticed and thought kind of 'odd' was that the railroad tracks going into one of the cave entrances looked awfully shiny for supposedly not being used recently.

Just things that make you go, "Hmmmmm....".

-- Wilferd (WilferdW@aol.com), September 27, 1999.

Maybe they are for emergencies, such as the floods in NC. I don't think people with pig polluted water (government regulations are always bad?)are able to cook or clean their dishes to eat off of. And Yes they probably are storing a whole bunch of them for Y2K. People have been screaming for years now that there should be contingency plans for Y2K and since there are contingency plans (as everyone wanted) people are screaming that the contingency plans prove there will be problems.

Guess they cannot do anything right acording to some people....

Storin MREs in caves, hmmmmm are you sure somebody at the penagon might be expecting an attack

-- troll goin underground (freeman@interx.net), September 27, 1999.

Cherri- I guess the point is, if they had been storing them for us, they would have been taking delivery day and night for months. However I'm sure the thought of a well fed Official will ease your pain when you're starving to death.

-- Gia (laureltree7@hotmail.com), September 28, 1999.

This "MREs in KC caverns" story has been around for *at least* three years now. Scary Gary's earlier post concerning it (18-20 months ago?) was halfway through a cycle that I first noticed on an AOL gunowner/survivalist board in mid-late 1996. Not sure how long it had been circulating before that. It keeps popping up, like that bogus picture of the white UN buses, whenever there are enough newbies to the topic for someone to think it's new. Never seen it confirmed, but then again why wouldn't the military use the caverns for storage? They have to put the stuff somewhere until the next "peacekeeper" mission that Willie commits us to.

-- Cash (cash@andcarry.com), September 28, 1999.

*sigh* I'm gonna post to this -just to add my 2 cents. Back in March, I participated in a forum of mostly women "preparing". One day, one of the regulars posted that she had been sorting out some old magazines of the survivalist genre. In one of the older ones she found a whole article about underground storage facilites that were in several places. KC, Nashville and outside of Chicago were the three biggest. There were photos of the entrances in the one in Chicago and discriptions which included areas so large that semis could drive in. Interesting thing was that this magazine article was dated in the late eighties. There was a lot of discussion on the subject but no one came up with a good reason for these underground storage areas. Some one suggested it was to feed the troops. What troops?

-- April (Alwzapril@home.com), September 28, 1999.

April,

Let me explain something about the underground storage caves: they're certainly 'real' and used extensively by a number of well- known, highly recognizable companies. Wolferman's Muffins, Rival Manufacturing (the maker of crock pots), etc. all use underground storage. The climate being 'naturally controlled' lends itself to being ideal for a food storage facility. Companies that need refrigeration end up spending much less on freezer costs, etc.

It's not just limited to food warehousing, but there is an awful lot of it, due to the inherent advantages of the coolness.

-- Wilferd (WilferdW@aol.com), September 28, 1999.

There are storage caves in Kansas City North.I was in one over 20 years ago.It was huge.Wilferd you may know the area,it's around Worlds of Fun,towards the south.

I believe Gary North posted an article about the Red Cross or Fema having major food supplies stored in different parts of the country for y2k.It was not that long ago and was not the article now being disscussed.

-- maggie (aaa@aaa.com), September 28, 1999.

Yes, Maggie, you are correct. The one you are probably talking about (the closest to Worlds of Fun) is the facility owned and operated by the Hunt family -- Hunt Midwest. It's very close to the 'riverboat' casinos along the river. There are several others not far from this one, too. Don't really know how many there are here, but there are several.

We've had occasion to go into one of these underground limestone cave storage facilities when we've gathered kindling (old, broken pallets) in years past. They are really very large, they meander all over the place. The one we used to frequent had rail service; I'm not sure if they all do. Pretty tight security in and out of the place. Even with lighting, it's dark, and gave me the willies.

Wilfred,I use to live in N.K.C. and K.C.N. in Mo.,do you live in one of these areas?

Maggie,

We live in KC, KS. My e-mail is real.

Extremely salient discussion from 1997 on underground tunnels, caves, etc. and the amount of money the government has spent on these, as well as 1988 legislation to limit the public's access to critical caves throughout the U.S. (It is a felony crime to enter caves without a federal guide accompanying you-many are being barred up at the entrances) You need real audio to listen and start at 1:14:30, to bypass unrelated information.
