UN Tests Y2K Emergency Power Supply

Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999; 3:16 p.m. EDT

GENEVA Anxious to avoid any disruption Jan. 1, the U.N. European headquarters tested its standby electricity supplies Saturday to check systems for the millennium bug.

A U.N. circular ordered all staff to switch off computers for the entire day to prevent damage from surges during the power checks.

"In the context of eventual disruptions due to a possible year 2000 bug, one of the possible scenarios might be a general breakdown in electricity in Geneva while an important conference was in progress at the United Nations," said the circular.

There are no conferences currently scheduled for Jan. 1, but Geneva often hosts important diplomatic negotiations called at short notice.

Emergency generators were used to supply lighting and other services to key assembly rooms, but much of the sprawling U.N. complex was in darkness. Given the weekend, there were no conferences in progress.

We are in the "One Year" test phase, don't you know Ray? Sure wish all our vital infrastructure would do the same. I rather do without now than in the dead of WINTER. bREEEEER..... Tommy
