Rivarossi corrugated sides H scale passenger cars

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

I am looking for Rivarossi corrugated sides (Budd) HO scale passenger cars. Seaboard 6780 Grill, 6781 Coach, 6782 Roomette, and 6783 Obvs. These are excellent reproductions of the Budd cars but I can't find them anywhere. IHC doesn't have them neither does Internet Hobbies or Model Expo. I don't have to have SAL, but do need the specific model type for accuracy. Can anyone help?

The society currently is making replacement window panels for these cars.We will have correct coach,coach-lounge,baggage-dorm,diner and 5-4-1-1 sleeper window panels. The old window area has to be removed and the new panels put in there place.Let us know if you are interested. They will sell for $12-13 per set.

Rivarossi does not produce these cars anymore. The rumour I heard was the factory was in Yugoslavia where the war is and the factory was destoyed. I managed to find quite a few of those cars at train shows. I also stop at any hobby store I see, you never know what you might find sitting around. If stores sell used items it would be a great place to start. I also agree with the previous post which states how unsatisfying the new IHC cars are. Where did they get the prototypes for them? I think they are AWFUL! Unfortunately they did do a nicely printed run of SCL cars. You can not duplicate them yourselves as there are no decals available. Maybe on successive runs Walthers might do a few additional roadnames on the new Budd cars.

The Rivarossi 1940 series corrugated cars are great models even if they are not perfect matches for the SAL cars. The problem is that Rivarossi does not seem to make them anymore. Any chance you can direct me to where I might find somemore? The IHC cars that came out recently leave a lot to be desired, in my opinion.

These models are a place to start, but are far from being correct for SAL,ACL or FEC.

I can't help you find any Rivarossi Budd cars, but there are a few points you may want to know. The grill, coach, and roomette all appear to be based on New York Central prototypes (with unprototypical skirting added on the grill and roomette, and Union Pacific-style full-length letterboards above the windows. The obs is from Reading's Crusader. Here are their correct prototypes and what'd be needed to make them more accurate. OBS: Reading Crusader, #1 and #5. May need to add upper side fluting. GRILL: NYC 450-467, built 1948. Remove skirting, trim down numberboard, add upper fluting. ROOMETTE: NYC Valley-series 10/6 built 1948. Remove skirting, add upper fluting. COACH: NYC 1941 Empire State Express (numbers escape me at this time). Add upper fluting. If modeling in late 1940s or later, remove skirting. Hope this little heads-up helps you some.
