I don't know if any of you use Bank One (Formerly NBD, or National Bank of Detroit) But today, their whole computer system crashed... Not just at one bank, but for ALL of them. When I asked the teller what happened, she said that they were fiddling around with a new computer system and that's all she knew... I asked if it was Y2K related, and she said that it made sense, but she didn't know for certain... This does not give me a pretty outlook into Bank One's future. They were pretty much helpless, there was nothing that they could really do without their computers! Truthfully, after this incident, I am thinking more and more about withdrawing my money. If anybody lives in the vicinity of one of these banks, than they can check it out for themselves, this is for REAL!! I'd like to hear what everyone thinks... but please don't post mean things. - Was human teller service still available, or did the computer failure stop all transactions?

People might tolerate a failure in their bank for a few days or a week, but not much longer. Please keep us posted as to how long this condition persists.

Here it says that Bank One is 99% ready. Oops! I wonder how many other companies that are "99% ready" are experiencing/will experience similar circumstances.

I was in Bank One today in Salt Lake City and cashed a clients check drawn on Bank One. No problem. Computer worked fine. I was in and out in a few minutes. So they were not all down!

Could you please specify the time--closest hour?--and Time Zone ( e.g., ET, CT, MT, PT! ) _you_ observed this event?

( Note: ATM's are not directly tied to the host banks; they go through a central network system that isn't in real-time mode. Transactions [ xns ] are "memo posted" from each ATM xn and reconciled electronically on maintenance/update schedules. )

Folks, as the Y2K countdown gets shorter, please post as much detailed information ( i.e., Who? What? When [ date/time/zone ]? Where? Why? Contact? URL? Media [ paper/date/page; TV/radio station/date/time/zone ] ) in original event postings ( like this one! )?! It could save bandwidth and follow-up grief from the trolls and pollys.

This morning, I saw a calm, soothing TV commercial from "your local credit unions" telling me how my RECORDS had always been secure in their hands and how they would continue to be secure into the new millennium. No word on how secure your MONEY is.

Yesterday I was at my bank. It's going to put on a free Y2K seminar with reps from telecom, power, EMA, etc., at a local Country Club, from 9 a.m. to noon on a Friday morning. I think I 'll go! It sounds as if it could be an exceptionally pleasant and upbeat event. (Will post info in separate thread for 'Burgh area folks.)

How absolutely awesome it would be to wake up one of these days and realize I had been deluded all along. I suppose, as unlikely as it seems from my current vantage point, that somehow it will all magically hang together. But I find myself thinking, more and more, about Cory's advice to run for the exits when hear them screaming "Don't Panic!"

Having bought & installed a woodstove, it's now my sincere hope that we never actually have to use it. Once in a while, I'll tell myself that it's all gonna be fine, that the worst that can happen is that I'll spend the first part of 2000 in embarrassment over having been such a fool.
