RE: Russian plains [sic]

AP wire story/Anch Daily News (also on another thread here somewhere)

FYI Snow Leopard: I attended a HCFA/state of AK Y2K seminar at the Anchorage Sheraton 2 days ago. The "Command Center" (recently used for 9/9/99) is on base at Fort Richardson, adjacent to Elmendorf AFB.

Thank you both!

Thanks Nelson,

I read the story on the conference in the Anchorage Daily News. Other than state officials and business leaders saying they were ready, was there anything of substance that came out of this gathering?

I am quite familiar with the "white elephant" also known as the new National Guard Headquarters on Ft Rich, which also houses the States' Dept of Emergency Management. What is most impressive about this building is that it is partially powered by a fuel cell, one of the first prototypes in the nation for a building this size. This would allow it to continue to operate in a major disaster such as another major earthquake or Y2K and retain power to monitor the situation throuhout the state, and dispatch assistance.

No, as usual things are On Track. They (fed officals) were _quite_ alarmed at the suggestion that small health care operations should tap a line of credit for the first quarter of operating expenses Just in Case ("oh no, we don't want that"). One thing I did not know, was that Alaska's Medicaid info was processed at a computer center in Richmond VA (I have since found out it's on Staples Mill Rd). New info: Alaska's 6.1 software upgrade _should_ be ready October 1 (with a full two months for testing!).

snow leopard6:

A friend who is an Ak State employee saw the Y2K folder we received, complete with the Y2k info sheet from the State/Governor's office; she said an identical one "just appeared" with her most recent paycheck without an explanation: " at least a week of nonperishable food and water"; "an ample supply of prescriptionand nonprescruption medications"; enough cash on hand to allow you to buy 3 to 7 days worth of goods...". Perhaps I'll start another thread on Preps in the Great Land...
