What's the best Y2K handheld ham radio,Yaesu FT51 HP
ICOM 32W
or
???
Is it true the Yaesu is not mil-com std?
Does the Yaesu have as much alternative frequency capability as the ICOM?
Thanks.

I've been looking into the same area - and found this site, which offers some good prices. The Yaesu VX-10 and VX-300, 400, 500 are all mil-spec. The VX-10 offers the best features I "think" - I'm not too knowledgable, but have been doing a bit of shopping around.

Depends on what you want to do with the handheld (HT) radio.Do you want a 'big' one or a pocket sized one. How much transmit power do you need (300 mW or 5 W)? Do you want extended scanner capability?
I have several low power HTs with only ham band receive -- they're cheap ($90 ea). I also have 2 full-function/power HT's, with the Icom T8A being my current favorite. All will trigger a 2-meter repeater that's 6 miles away.
