Lesson notes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : aiken seniornet staff : One Thread

There was some confusions so I want to make one thing clear. The lesson notes I sent out were sent to you all as one volunteer to another. They are not any official Aiken SeniorNet script. Someone asked me if it wasn't silly taking the book and subsetting it further when every thing that was in my notes was in the lesson plan. It is just what I have always done when I taught classes. I do it for several reasons. 1) I don't like carrying a book while I lecture. 2) It is too easy to get into a reading mode when you use the full text book. 3) And finally and probably th emost importnat to me, I find that creating the notes completely familiarizes me with the content to the extent that I sometimes can go pages without even looking at the notes. It is just my style and what I am most comfortable with. I realize that now that my class is behind 3 of the 5 others they may be of little value to you. If you want me to stop sending them let me know.

The lesson plan is a positive way of teaching. It would be great if you would jump ahead a week so as to be on the same time frame as those classes in advance of yours.

It would be great if I would get ahead a week in lots of things in my life. Just kidding - I will try to do that.

I would say that everyone really needs to prepare their own notes, and from that standpoint someone else's lecture notes are just a crutch. You have to also remember that all the classes are slightly different, and the instructor should have a feel what aspect of the lesson has given difficulty. You also should give credit to the class for a certain amoun of intelligence, and higher reasoning power. The instructor shouldn't just stick to the maechanical repetition of key or mouse strokes that the book gives.

Bruce your notes for class 3 were helpful when I subed for Lee Hyder. I think we should be developing these notes into instructor guidelines for future sessions, and we could also recycle the student manuals from the instructors to cut cost. Pete also has some good ideas, but notes/guides can be provided and still give the instructors plenty of space to teach their own class.
