Can I use any kind of kerosene in my Deitz lantern?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

I have heard that there is more than one kind of kerosene. Some is dyed and some is clear (there may be other kinds too). My lantern burns lamp oil too but it is very expensive. Can all kinds of kerosene be used in these lanterns, and what is best?

The differences will be in level of stench. K-1 will work fine. #2 fuel oil will work but will smell a bit more any other (motor diesel etc will REALLY smell).

I don't have this type of lantern, just some regular oil lamps... But one question that might be good to know, too, is once you start burning one type of fuel, can you change?

Also, I've always just used lamp oil in the oil lamps-- but I think kero can be used in them. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Thanks.

I have always used kerosene, (not lamp oil,) but they do smell. I have a large house so the fumes can be managed with a slightly opened window. I have always used clear kero for lamps and use the red dye for heaters. Actually, you are only supposed to use the red dye kero for vented heaters (like the Monitor brand,) but the clear kero is hard to come by in these parts. I would avoid kero in small unventilated spaces and, certainly, always have a carbon monoxide detector in any room where I used kero.

I've used oil in lamps, kerosine in lamps, then shitched back and forth from oil to kerocine. The smell is the difference, burning is the difference ,little more smoke withe kerosine. You can also make your own oil if you have nut trees. Crush nuts add water boil let oil come to top, Skem oil, reboil to evapoate water, then you have oil. Best to try many different nuts. Sure wounld be nice if people had olive trees.

I use oderless charcoal lighter fluid in mine. Recomended as an alternative by Deitz. Cheaper than lamp oil. Less odor than Kero.
