What will happen to the Officials If it turns out that they lied?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

OK we all know that TPTB are lying in some way or another. There is a question that remains unanswered.

What will be done to the people who have lied to the American people if TSHTF?

My kids get severly punished if they lie to me. I would lose my job if I lied to my boss. My wife would leave me if I lied to her. What will happen to the elected officials?

Who will judge these people?

"...a Government of the people, for the people and by the people." Hangin's too good for 'em! I think there ain't gonna be enough rope to go around. I myself would normally recommend execution by firing squad, but then again, why waste a bullet?

....Shootin's too good for 'im! Hangin's too good for 'im! They should be torn into little tiny pieces...and buried alive!!!

They all better hope they're in the "Continuation of Government"program.

-- Eric michael (bizarr2@hotmail.com), September 16, 1999.

All they are going to say is that they "thought they had fixed everything". What can ya do? All monetary losses and expenses of remediation will be passed down to the consumers regardless. If we waste a lot of money in court trying to sue them we'll end up also paying for their costs of defending themselves. Best thing to do is boycott the companies that are taking us for a ride and find an alternative. Let them wither away and die for their greed and irresponsibility. We'll have to pay for their bankruptcies, but at least we can finally establish a precedent for the kind of business ethics we require.

I am not so worried about the company officials. Its the politicians that I am wondering about. The pollies (who seem to be the majority) will forgive them by saying it "Wasn't their fault" or "they never said they were sure it was fixed" and then they will re-elect these bozo's all over again to re-build what was torn down by them in the first place.

Gawd I hope not Dragon...

-- Billy-Boy (Rakkasn@Yahoo.com), September 16, 1999.

Why it's okay to lie. The majority of American's think that it's okay to lie. We love it when our president stands before us shaking his finger at us telling us he's telling the truth. The people did not demand that he step down. Why would most Americans hold their government accountable for anything? Lying is the norm. Besides, the government is bigger than any of us, what can you do about anything? All government officials are about as worthless as tits on a boar, but heh, we love them, we voted for them so we get what we asked for.

If our goverment officials have deliberiately lied, and thousands of people lose thier lives, they should be held accountable. I would propose that when the dust eventually settles that they be tried in a similar fashion as many head Nazi leaders were at nuremburg and charged with "crimes against humanity". If found guilty they should suffer the same fate as thier predecessors did some 50 years ago. Weather or not there will be enough of a system in tack to hand out this type of justice post y2k is debatable. However, if many lives are indeed lost, I am certain the masses will be looking for some pay-back.

Neither do I BUT I have been in a worse case mood here lately.

I have a good example of how emergency management works (or doesn't) here in Atlanta. There was a single vehicle (Semi Cab no Trailer) accident at 3:00 am on one of our major traffic routes. The trafic jam affected all of Atlanta including surface streets until 11:00 am! I have a 45min drive to work that took me 2 1/2 hours.

Yeah they can handle it when TSHTF.

You will all feel the wrath of the rodents! Ours is but a small role in ridding the planet of you furless-monkey-ape people! The true rullers will bury you and innundate you beneath the husks of our nut-leavings! Long live the Rodent Revolution!!

Dragoneyez asked an excellent question, retribution?

What will be done to the people who have lied to the American people if TSHTF?

You got to catch 'em first and that means duputizin' a posse.

Sounds like good clean wholesome fun to me.

They will suffer a fate worse than death. That is, they will be expelled from office, and [horror music here] be forced to earn a living doing something productive instead of living off the labor of others.

-- Prometheus (fire@for.man), September 16, 1999.

They think they will justify it and say it was a consensus of the high officials in government as to avoid mass hysteria, that they thought the problem would be fixed in time and it's everybody elses fault, then go atfer certain people to use as scapegoats (like some high nerc official) then right before he has to testify he is mysteriosly killed (maybe I've been reading too much stuff about Clinton lately).

-- anon (anon@anon.com), September 16, 1999.

Based on events to date, they (the Clintons) will get none of the blame, but the right-wing, militant, rabid redneck gun-nut terrorists will be assigned all blame two days later for hoarding and panic-mongering an innocent public, the poor, and elderly....the Clintons will tour a shelter in DC, Gore will be ignored, and the press will loudly shower blame elsewhere.

It always seems the administration needs two days to re-align the media spin machine to their ends. But the first two days of news reproting is fairly accurate.

-- Robert A. Cook, PE (Marietta, GA) (cook.r@csaatl.com), September 16, 1999.

My first tendency is to agree with Magnolia. Nothing will happen. But, I can look back at what happened on Kaua'i after the last hurricane. The populace apparently thought that the mayor hadn't done a good job in the relief effort. She was not re-elected (she lost in the primary). The Democrat who beat her in the primary was also defeated. This in a heavily Democratic state! It is particularly significant that the year 2000 is a Presidential election year!

-- Mad Monk (madmonk@hawaiian.net), September 16, 1999.

Be prepared to fire them all. No election for anyone who didn't do right on Y2K. Right now, I think the best thing we could all do is innundate all candidates with phone calls, emails and letters telling them we want a postive stand from them urging Y2K preparedness and that talking about a "long weekend" or a "3 day storm" is unacceptable.

If they think the voters want Y2K talk, we'll get it!

What happened to the officials that loudly declared British Beef to be safe a few years back? Were they charged with any crime?

Of course there will be blame leveled and it will be leveled squarely on the most conspicuous fall-guy in existence. Bill Clinton and, by extension, the presidency. (Wonder why the media (which is supposed to be Clinton's lap dog according to some people here) would spend so much time publicly humiliating him? Could it be that Clinton is someone's straw man?)

When the population is hungry enough, frustrated by economic woes, and disenchanted with the current government don't be surprised if someone rises to power that is many, many times worse then Clinton.

I hate to say it, but the man isn't smart enough, self controled enough or strong willed enough to do anything evil at all. Think about what Clinton would do if elected Supreme Dictator of the Tardions or somesuch? Have a huge barbeque with bikini's mandatory for the women? He can never be truly evil because he is limited by his own carnal appetites. Now, Hillary... there's evil if I ever saw it. A chill, scheming woman.

Beware the vegetarians. The gluttons are easil

Bardou: You used the term "all govt officials". That is like saying all internet users are extremeists or all pollies or doomers are kooks!. There are some very good govt workers out there. Unfortunately the good ones never get promoted to positions of responsibility usually because of perceived anit-political correctness views like 8 hours of work per day etc. Remember Peter's Principle? Janet Reno and the SEC Def are prime examples. I do not measure pollies by Andy Ray or doomers by .. oh well you get the drift.

And if absolutely nothing goes wrong, how many here would tar and feather Joel Willemsen? Will you be going after Ed Yourdon with torches and pitchforks? Or does your definition of lying only apply to those who disagree with you? Gee, Yourdon didn't lie, he told it like he saw it and just happened to be wrong. Nobody's perfect. But de Jager, now, if things are bad de Jager is a liar who sold out. If things aren't bad, de Jager is a liar who just got lucky.

Yep, sure is simple.

Well... if the article below is any hint, the officials in charge of obfuscation, disinformation, and delusion and other ways to spin and hide the truth will probably be elected Pope or at least King of the Universe:

FORMER U.S. OFFICIAL CHOSEN TO HEAD WORLD POLICE - FRIDAY, JULY 02, 1999

A former U.S. law enforcement official on Friday was chosen as the lead candidate to head Interpol, the global law enforcement organization.

Ron Noble, former Treasury undersecretary for enforcement, was named during an executive session at Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France.

Noble, 42, best known as the chief investigator of the failed Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms raid on the Branch Davidian compound outside Waco, Texas, is the only person the United States has ever nominated to head Interpol in the 75-year history of the organization.

-- Linda (lwmb@psln.com), September 16, 1999.

Good point Flint. However, if nothing goes wrong what have I lost? If something goes wrong I'm prepared. I don't rest my whole reasons for preparing on what Ed Yourdon or anyone else has to say about it. I have researched Y2K pro and con extensively, and I have come to the conclusion that we are in for some rough times. There's no one really to blame here, you get in line and you take your chances. If you choose not to prepare that's your business, it's every man for himself. There's some here that don't like it when I say that, but it's the truth and some don't like to hear the truth.

-- bardou (bardou@baloney.com), September 16, 1999.

Mike:

I agree, things are going wrong at a rate I don't expect to be much exceeded, and which should diminish within about 8 months. I guess we just need to roll up our sleeves and hang a few politicians.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), September 16, 1999.

Hang a few politicans? They'll all be safely tucked away in their Y2K bunkers. I wonder if the Clintons have theirs finished yet?

-- bardou (bardou@baloney.com), September 16, 1999.

People died at Waco. We've been lied to about Waco. The individual who took responsibility is still in office...(although she may have been lied to, as well).

It will be up to us to REALLY pound home the malfeasance of those who discouraged preparations...and did not prepare our governments (at various levels). Letters to the editor, campaigning for their opponents, or even running ourselves...if we want to see a change. Sitting on our okoles will accomplish nothing except to keep incompetence alive and in office.

I'll volunteer. My fiendish plan; lighted matches between their toes, a water drip on their heads, cod liver oil cocktails, and playing a Bay City Rollers album over, and over, and over...I gotta stop this. It's getting exciting.

Flint -- The question wasn't, "what will be done if your pollie nothing-significant-will-happen view of Y2K is correct?" The question was, "what will be done if TSHTF?" Try and stick to the thread.

Correct answer: nothing significant.
