HI - I am interested in purchasing a Bearcat scanner (or someother type scanner)...

Is trunked scanner a must? What other features are recommended? Any good models you know of?

Any info appreciated.

I was looking for a scanner in Yahoo's classifieds and found one for $50. Then I changed my mind about buying it. (Going to get a hand- held cb that scans instead.) The guy selling it is at: Todd7339@aol.com

Which scanner to buy ? Depends on what you want to listen to. If the police, emergency services, sheriff in your area are on an 800 mhz trunked system, then yes you need a trunked scanner. Try to find out which system they are using. Be sure the scanner you buy will access this type system. They may be on 460.??? mhz or some other band. Find out the freqs the folks are on and then buy a scanner to get them. Radio Shack is good. Check out Grove Enterprises. They sell used equipment as well as new. They have a good web site. Search for them. Good luck !

If your local emergency services uses an 00 MHz trunked system, then a TrunkTracker is what you must buy. Uniden has a Bearcat TT, as does Radio Shack; the former is generally less expensive. TTs (so far) use those plastic-wrapped 4-packs of AAs with the inconvenently-tiny little plug. You need a charging cradle if you intend to keeop a spare back-up, so consider the total price of scanner, 2 battery packs (about $20-25 each), and a cradle. Thanks to a poster on the preps forum I learned that using an earphone cuts down on battery usage.
