What do 3mil evacuees,Pollys, have in Common??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Please help me with this one.,

I can't help but think there is a lesson to be gleaned, in the 3 million people that evacuated, all at the same time. (life leaves clues).

A philosopher once said ,that our brain waves occilate(sp) at the same frequency of the earths' rotation. (or something like that) And that we need to occasionally smack ourselves to snap out of the somnambolistic(sp) state we are in.

He also mentioned how we have lost our exquisite periphery vision over time, since we don't hunt much (survival) anymore. A wrap up: what are 3 million people thinking when they all get in their car and leave at the same time?

What are people thinking when they call y2k, media hype?

I suspect that, because in our current system, so few "middle class" people EVER experience a situation where demand far outstrips resources.

Except for Beanie Babies, Cabbage Patch Kids, and other essential Christmas supplies.

Seriously, how often do you go into a town and there are NO motel rooms available?

How often do you go into a grocery store and not find pretty much what you want to buy?

It is not that people don't "believe" that it can happen. It is more the fact that the ability to ask the question "CAN it happen" is not there.

I'm afraid I am not expressing myself clearly. But imagine trying to describe a "new color" to someone who has never considered any colors beyond the primary pigments (red, blue, yellow).

You must share some language in order to communicate. If a person does not live in a "what if" world, little if anything you say or do will bring them to that place.

For one thing, it is not nearly as comfortable as the place they would be leaving behind.

Jon,

Somewhere below I answered that the eloquence was almost gone from this forum. I was wrong. Thanks.

Most of the evacuees were Pollies...they didn't prepare, they didn't evacuate proactively. They just waited until they were told to leave, and left. What is sad is that some of these people evacuated out of the path of storms in the past...

How many people rebuild homes that were destroyed by floods...in the same place?

My brother and I have tried to help our 80+ (depression era, WWII) parents GI. FLEEING Floyd with 16 hour (100 mile) car trips, no gas, food etc. has helped greatly! Thank you Floyd :~).

THIS TIME they have a 2nd chance!

3 million evacuees & pollys, "do you feel lucky?" I read somewhere in one of the threads that the time to leave is when you first have the thought. If you wait until it becomes common knowledge then it is too late. I believe many people will GI late in the game. They will be upset that they missed out on the generators etc. and the media will spin the hoarding song. I do not bring up rollover unless I am asked about it. My answers are specific to the question being asked. I am truthful but I realize that I did not become a GI without a lot of thinking and reading and soul searching. For some they will do the same but it may be too late. I feel hard times will come for all of us, pollys and doomers alike. I will miss the creature comforts and hope that I will live to see them return.

What are 3 million people thinking when they get in their car and leave?

Let's see here:

1. I'm the only one that's going to beat the crowd.

2. I'll be the first in line.

3. I'll get gas first because no one else thought of it.

4. I hate mother nature, why do I have to suffer through this.

5. The government is to blame for my lack of preparation.

6. People are pigs and hoarders, they didn't leave anything for me.

7. They need to build bigger freeways.

8. Why don't you have a room available, it's off season?

9. Why do I put myself through this time and time again? Surely the government and technology has a way to divert hurricanes.

10. Hurricane? What hurricane, it's all just a bunch of media hype.

11. Hurricane? What hurricane, it's just Costco, Home Depot, and Krogers way of selling you stuff you don't and won't need.

12. There ain't going to be no hurricane, your nothing but a doomer gloomer, quit talking like that!

What about work? Some folks have jobs where they just can't pack up and leave.

I found one thing out - there ain't NO WAY you can evacuate 2 million people. You would have to have at least a week to do it right. We sat in traffic for a few hours and didn't get anywhere. Came back home when they said it wouldn't be that bad and rode it out at the house.
