Shelters have no generators

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Our local emergency mgmt. organization FINALLY is attempting to put together a plan for mass sheltering "just in case" there are problems with the "rollover". Guess what, out of 300 churches asked, 100 said that they could provide shelter in an emergency but that NONE of them have generators. Guess the DGI'S will be cold whether they stay home or go to one of the shelters! And where I live, it gets pretty cold in January. DGI CONVERT ALERT! I was able to persuade another DGI to get out of denial and begin preps for her family. Are you all still trying also? I did this in the face of ridicule all weekend long as this was a cousin and we were having a family reunion this past weekend. They were all having fun making me the brunt of many jokes. It really takes a strong conviction to this cause to withstand their barrage. They call me weird, overreacting, they ask me why I'm so scared about this. One more thing, did anyone see where HERSHEY (the chocolate company) reported that their earnings for their fiscal year ending 1-4-00 will be 7 to 10% below expectations because of a computer failure with their delivery system? And, they don't expect deliveries to be back to normal until sometime in October. I know that candy bars not making it to the shelves in time is no big deal, but what happens when these types of failures hit more important products in the JIT delivery pipeline?

Vern,

Kinda amazes me that some people dont think beyond the concept that a shelter for large numbers of people, needs to be more than four walls.

Got food, water, light, warmth n TP? (Etc.)

Diane

Guess what?

Schools, community centers, gyms, and most other places have no generators either; nor any alternative source of heat.

I would imagine that the local powers that be plan on going around and seizing them from private individuals and businesses for use "for the good of the children" at the shelters. Ditto food stocks, etc.
