See ya later guys

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

If Fran is any experience, myself and other local posters to this forum- mindspring, bellsouth, etc- will probably be offline for a while. Last time it was almost a month (phone was restored but not t1).

So see ya later after the Pink (Fl...)

Forrest and all NCers...

Hang in there. Know that our thoughts and prayers go out to you all. We are wishing that it turns east and heads on out to sea.

Hoping the only WALL you experience is the one below, and NOT the eye wall. :-)

Pink Floyd

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), September 15, 1999.

Good luck! Will be thinking of and praying for all of you in floyd's path.

-- Tiara (sorceress5@hotmail.com), September 15, 1999.

Forrest, In Fran we lost power in Raleigh about the time the eye hit Wilmington. We were out for a week. Good luck. Keep to leeward.

-- Puddintame (achillesg@hotmail.com), September 15, 1999.

Best wishes Forrest... and stay safe!

We'll keep the Y2K home fires burning!

Blessings to all... in and around Floyd's path. (Hoping/praying/ imagining it turns out to sea as well).

Good luck, Forrest. May G-d be with you and all those in Floyd's path.

Gayla, who would have ever thought your were a Pink Floyd fan? BTW, which one's Pink? :-)

Nabi

You wouldn't guess it from her posts on this forum, but in real life Gayla is a major freakazoid. ;)

And again I will say it, my thoughts are with all of you in the path of this bugger, please do what you need to be safe.

"Last time it was almost a month (phone was restored but not t1)."

Geez...I thought bumps in the road only lasted 2-3 days...

Good Luck!...I survived Camielle in 1969.

Gayla a Pink Floyd fan?! That is too cool ....

-- DaveW (dwood@southwind.net), September 15, 1999.

Gayla, you all right, no matter what Uncle Deedah says about you...: )

My heart goes out to everyone whose lives are or are about to be touched by Mr. Floyd, the major 'roid. Good luck and be safe.

Run like hell... (I just had to)

I've been improving drainage and securing the outside almost all afternoon--I will NOT grow this many potted plants next year. We've been told that this will probably be another Fran for our area, which is bad but not catastrophic. That's IF the storm turns more east as TPTB expect and IF it doesn't regain some of its lost strength over the Gulf Stream.

I had to do it. I got Sweetie to take me to the store when he got home from work mid-afternoon. My excuse was I wanted ice cubes. Food Lion was completely out of ice and people were in long lines at the check-out. I was amazed to see lots of meat products in the carts, not surprised at the snack items. We tried the convenience store--nada. Then we set off for Kroger. On the way I saw an ice delivery truck at Eckerd--STOP! The poor guy, people were taking it off the freezer shelves as fast as he put it out. The store's entire inventory of batteries was in a special display near the door--hardly anything in there, just a few 9-volts. Then the manager came out, practically running, with a arge box in his hands: "Here are the D batteries, folks!" Oh it was such a special moment--reminded me of the old K-Mart blue-light specials--you know, when they'd announce one and people would rush over to the designated spot.

There was no bread or milk, of course. I got the last two jars of regular roasted peanuts, also the last few bags of chips and nachos. Oh, I don't know why, I just wanted them!

People were amazingly cheerful, bit of a party atmosphere. I got the impression people were very happy with themselves for planning ahead. (Yeah, I know, but for Fran hardly anyone bought so much as a votive candle!) Lots of smiles, cheerful remarks to complete strangers (very untypical!). I doubt their later counterparts will be so good-natured when they get to the stores and find nothing left on the shelves.

Some of you may not know I work part-time for the local newspaper and a Raleigh TV station, gleaning info from the crime prevention work I do, a few contacts and my scanner. I've already got the scanner going, of course, and from the familiar voices it sounds as if they've called in extra 911 personnel and other emergency services folks. I shall be cosy here tonight with Sweetie and the cats (and I think my neighbor's cat--I can't reach them and they haven't returned my call; dammit, I think they may have gone off and left the poor cat to fend for herself as best she can).

There--that was the first report of a tree going down, taking that neighborhood's power with it. Not due to wind, none of that yet, just to the soaked ground--it's been raining all day. When the winds start, even if they're not hurricane strength, we'll have lots more of the same. Look out Puddintame, it's Deja Fran all over again! Ah--I can hear the rain getting heavier--we'll be well-soaked by the time stronger winds start around midnight, give or take.

I'll pop in again as long as we have phones up (let me brag about my new notebook computer with the BATTERY, but wish I had a spare!).

We were only slightly grazed here in Chapel Hill. Places east of Raliegh were more torn up.

"in real life Gayla is a major freakazoid. ;) "

Gayla is a really cool name. If I had a daughter of my own I'd name her Gayla.
