DIGITAL FLUB Batteries Not Included

Monday, September 13, 1999; Page F05

A battery failure in a single telephone switching center shut down phone service for about 100,000 customers in Plano, Tex., one of the state's foremost technology-industry centers, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The glitch began at 11 a.m. on July 20, and was largely fixed by 8 that night. In the meantime, many customers turned to cellular phones. With thousands trying to get on that network, it was hard at times to get a line.

Technicians at the GTE Corp. switching center worked to restore 911 service first; in the meantime, one Plano resident was forced to flag down a police officer to report that his house was on fire.
