WHAT IS YOUR WORST Y2K FEAR?

Presently I am disturbed regarding the scenario of redneck DGIs, whom I don't like, banging and cursing at my front door in the middle of Winter.

I have experienced nightmares regarding these potential intrusions.

I live in northwestern Ohio, and I expect a deep chill factor WTSHTF in JAN00.

I am prepared to help my family and neighbors, but I do NOT want to interface with idiotic DGIs with guns who imagine I have TONS of provisions.

I have moved MOST of my provisions to sites miles away in the country, but here in the city I expect that DGIs will demand that I GIVE them food and water which I possess because they could NOT obtain any provisions from the stores, which will be empty until the next Just In Time shipment (which should be real soon, we promise, once the trucks unload into our main warehouses!)

Yes, I will give some needful visitors food and bottled water, but I can NOT supply the entire neighborhood of DGI denialists and coworkers who have mocked me for months.

I am experiencing loss of sleep over this conundrum.

You pretty much nailed it, Randolph. DGI's with guns. Who I suspect WAY outnumber the GI's with guns. Just try to spread your stores out, so hopefully the raiders won't find them all. That's about all I can figure out what to do about it.

Sell your neighborhood house NOW! Move to very, very tiny town or deep country, if need be, get land, put up manufactured home or have large camper or three campers. Your fears are not unfounded. No one knows what will happen or how long. There's a tiny chance that things will not be that bad, but not worth the risk to find out. If you have children, and things hold out until Dec.- stay in rented house (after you sold yours and got retreat home) until school lets out for Christmas and git!

I figure the Burger King crowd will tire very quickly of a diet of beans and rice, this includes your neighbors and visitors. Your worst fear is probably everyone's worst fear, and that's gangs intruding and demanding your stuff. Your neighbors probably have family, and when word gets out to the other family members, it's just a matter of time before your food and water is gone. Water will be the most important commodity that anyone can store, and the hardest to store due to space and proper storage containers. The best you can do is to take care of yourself and family first because they do come before others.

My mother recently had installed a manual well pump which generates water from a 58' depth.

Last year I had planted a hibiscus on the old well mound, and the well pump is about 18" from it. The installer said it was a nice plant.

Unfortunately, the main parts are painted in a BOLD RED.

I told my mother that any visitors might think it's an antique relic just for display.

Should the hibiscus grow next year, the well pump will be hidden from those who travel on her road.

Water isn't my concern, but it is for other people I know who are preparing. Randolph, maybe you should take a break for a couple of days and relax and not think about Y2K and all the "what ifs." Start the rumor next week that you have contracted Tuberculosis or Hepatitis, most will then fear that you, your home, to include your family and provisions are in some way contaminated and contagious and will hopefully steer clear. Locate stickers for the doors and a medical bracelet to further the ruse. If Y2K turns out favorably you can then have a routine physical and be discovered to be just fine.

My own worst fears is to die early or first in my family, since I have all of the cold weather, survival, hunting, and outdoor skills needed to get my family through whatever level of turbulance we hit.

My biggest fear is if its bad enough that I have to shoot someone, but not bad enough to incapacitate the police and courts.

Remember, in many states its not considered self-defence unless you are cornered and they are about to kill you then and there. You are legally required to allow anyone to steal anything they want, even if that means you'll starve later.

I have thought also about the prospect of needy neighbors but if you don't tell them about your supplies how will they know? Given a moderate-severe outcome most likely they will have to go without food for a week,this will not kill them but it will be an unpleasant experience for them.Given a catastrophic situation,then it will not matter what you give them anyway.So what should you give them?Nothing.

People won't stay in their house and go hungry for more than 3 days. I figure they have at least that much food in their house to get by on. I agree with Stanley, keep your plans to yourself. The minute you start handing out food, word will get out and then you are obligated to take care of the pack. No telling what people will do when they go three days without a Big Mac or a Burrito Supreme.

Whether it is Y2K, a devastating solar flare, biowarfare, or nuclear attack, it is the end of 'Life' as we know it. No matter who survives, they will never be able to forget those who did not. There is more than just preparing to 'survive', for we also need to pray for the grace and strength to thrive and go on with life. It does not help to meditate on our fears, other than to face them and go on, just as courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to choose to do what is right in the paralyzing face of fear. If our prime goal is merely to be a survivor, then we will be no more than the animals in nature, who fight and claw and feed on carrion. We who are able to recognize the beauty of the hues of sunset, be stirred by a sonnet, and feel our hearts swell to music, need to fight for what is True and Good so that we do not merely 'survive'.

I pray everyday that God will help us prepare enough to be able to help others, but particularly children, since they are usually the first and most vulnerable victims of great catastrophes. I hope that everyone who reads this forum will consider buying even a little bit of formula, some Pedialyte, baby cereal,... a bag of diapers. With all the horrible scenarios and memories you may have to carry with you, wouldn't it be nice to remember saving the life of a baby or child? I know you cannot save everyone, but quite feasibly, you could save ONE, and that ONE is priceless.

Come Y2K my worst fear is Biowarfare/terrorism. While I do expect some disruption from direct Y2K glitches these I feel folks in most areas will handle pretty well...call it a major inconvienience for most folks at worst. Something we can weather if we pull together. I've made preps....got food, water, meds, fuel, clothing, comms, ordinance, etc., so I can take care of my son, myself and perhaps help others. Unfortunatly I rather expect exterior factors to complicate things.

My fear is that other countries who don't do so well or want to weaken the U.S. will attempt to "pile-on" the woes come the end of this year. It doesn't neccessarily have to be a nation-state doing this...any one of a number of terrorist organizations would love to strike the "Great Satan" a blow. There are some rumors floating about than Bin Laden has several suitcase nukes but I consider biological agents the most chilling of WMDs (weapons of mass destruction) we might be targeted with. Although they have the capability of killing millions biologicals are weapons of terror...people pull back from their communities and neighbors, contact diminishes because of the fear of infection. This would be a major blow to our recovery period and possibly set us back years. This is my worst fear and it doesn't seem to unfounded sad to say.

I'm really worried about people who wake up on the 1st and still have power, so they assume everything will be all right. Then they "let down their guard" so to speak. I really don't think we will see the worst of the effects for a few weeks or months. IF, as Y2K Pro says, we get to May and nothing has happened, I will be VERY relieved and will share some of my food with our local food pantry.

My worst Fear?

That Id spiral down into the energy of FEAR... permanently... and not be able to climb back out of it. Fear blocks creativity, stops solutions, and over-runs ones ability to connect with inner guidance and intuition. Fear is a closed box, rather than a world with no preconceived walls.

The most portable, unbreakable, and lasting gift you can give yourself, your family and neighbors, is the ability to remain strong and positive, within the midst of chaos. Rather like standing within the calm eye of a local hurricane. Balance, love and kindness are as valuable a survival skill, as several stashes of rice and beans (though thats a prudent back-up plan as well). With this gentler energy... synchronicities occur, the unexpected manifests, coincidences coincide, and magic happens. I know that, because Ive personally experienced living it. It works. Some future day, Ill write a book. ;-D

So, my biggest Fear would be to loose that ability... for good.

Buy what you eat and eat what you buy. If we don't have food problems, I just won't have to go to the grocery store very often. I have bought extras for someone who comes to the door hungry. I have 200# of oat meal, for one. I have 400# of whole corn and two grinders where corn meal can quickly be made. I have extra beans and rice. I am saving all coffee cans so that a wire can be put in for a handle to cook beans, etc over a camp fire. We live in the forest and have lots and lots of lakes and rivers and fire wood. If they have some beans/rice/grain and water and a can and some matches, they can go on their way. In short supply could be Vit C. Make sure you buy some. You may be well fed and still get scurvy. I am sure that our forest will be full of campers from the north. Some arriving before year end. And why not? Water and wood abound. But they MUST ORGANIZE THEIR CAMPS so as to prevent illness. My biggest fear are hungry women and children.

My biggest fears.....Lets see, well after liguidating everything I owned last year for cash, and temporarily holding up in an apartment as tenant at will, setting on high quality preps for a full year without anything. Daily, trying to prove to my wife thy you shouldnt shoot the messenger for the message, and being fully committed to a 8+ on the scale next year, they would have to be, but not necessarily in this order. one of my biggest fears is getting a small scratch while out in the bush and not noticing until too late that the scratch has turned in to an abcess of pus and rotten flesh.Being far from modern medical services I'm afraid of needing to do drastic things like alow flies to lay maggots into the rotting flesh to eat away the decay.How many maggots should be allowed to infest the area?Maggots only eat rotting flesh,right?Supposedly the maggots will stop eating when rotten flesh has been devoured.Still,the very idea scares me.

My biggest Y2K disappointment would be that it brings us merely a BITR. I really do hope for a paradigm-shifting event. Let me restate that - a POSITIVE, paradigm-shifting event. And yes, a good Y2K smack of our collective faces would provide opportunities for spiritual growth as a species.

What about the death & destruction a 5+ would bring, Mr. Bingo1? Perhaps you &/or loved ones will suffer due to Y2K-related problems.

I do not fear death. I look forward to its coming, in its own time. I do not wish for anyone to suffer unduly. However, suffering does bring with it opportunity for advancement. Therefore I look upon suffering in a positive light.

Well, I'm done with Saturday work at the factory and various clandestine Y2K doomer activities.

I truly appreciate all of your responses, except for Y2K Pro.

If I saw Y2K Pro fall off a cliff, I would not mind yelling to Chicken Little at the cliff's base that the sky is not falling. Would I be justified when I witnessed the Great Splat of '99?

Firstly, this morning I talked to the only other true GI I know on my level; his first name is Frank, and he is a Vietnam veteran and told me he is stocking up on .22 ammo with an additional rifle.

When I mentioned the scenario of breaking into his household, he told me that he will shoot intruders dead. And he will.

As our discussion continued in the maintenance workshop, he said I should also shoot intruders.

I do NOT want to kill any humans. I do not want to enter eternity with human blood on my hands. But Frank might.

Secondly, I was listening to a tape by Pastor David Meyer of Beaverdam, Wisconsin, and I'll start a new thread based upon a short transcript of his comments.

Thirdly, I want to mention another fear, which is this:

While transporting provisions to my family, friends and neighbors, I fear being ambushed.

If I am driving my Jeep Cherokee with cans and TP, what would I do if I encounter a roadblock placed by a deputy sheriff?

If I am riding my Schwinn Heavy-Duti bicycle with loaded wire baskets, will those in need shoot me for the bicycle and provisions?

If I am walking with my loaded bug out backpack, will I be an easy target? (Just try running with one of these on your back, and you'll know what I mean.)

Fourthly, this early evening at my mother's country homestead, I saw by her storage barn a small dead mouse with its head missing; feeding at its neck was a yellow jacket wasp. I interpreted this sign as the natural descending senescence foretelling the arrival of Autumn.

In another sense, people will sense senescence and begin to think about stocking up. A new small minority will finally understand that Just In Time distribution is very fragile and fickle, and they will act upon their impulse buying habits.

Their purchases might trigger the stampede; however, I think a truly unexpected SHOCK WAVE will be necessary to awaken the other DGIs.

Fifthly, I do NOT believe the ultimate Infomagic scenario can happen. When America's economy crashes and pulls down the global economy, there will be very dark days of pain and death. But, it will NOT be the end of the world as you know it.

There will be a massive paradigm shift, a monumental Renaissance of technology, as people rebuild cities and technologies under the guidance of a new world leader. However, there will be a deep seeping of evil into the world, and brainwashing will become PERFECTED.

Don't fall for the future wave of ingenious propaganda! Use the brain which God gave you and exercise common sense.

This may seem far out to some of you, but others are well aware what amazing events will take place on our planet.

The craziest years are yet to come!

Randolph: There are very few Americans who suffered as much as some of our Bataan Death March survivors did. Are for that matter as some of the Hanoi Hilton survivors. I suggest you read about some of these men especially Jeremiah Denton and his compadres. I had the very great privilege of meeting some of these men and personally talking with them. The one common thread that kept them alive was their faith in God and the fact that they believed he was in control - not the NVA and Cubans who questioned and tortured them. They also mentioned that their military training helped them to overcome fear and apathy. Practice your survival skills until you feel comfortable regardless of the circumstances. If you have done this and prepared well, live at peace with yourself - you have done your best.

Well, first I want to say I really try not to dwell upon my y2k fears. I am a visual Artist, my imagination is well honed & could frighten just about anyone....except maybe Zoobie :-D LOL.

I am afraid of my children needing water, and having none. So, I find a way to prepare a practical solution and put that fear away.

I am afraid of my children being hungry, and having no food. So, I do everything I can to make sure that doesn't happen, and I put that fear away.

I do not apologize for my faith. But, I believe in God. I do what I am responsible to do (preps), and trust Him to help us cross the bridges when we come to them. The idea we can know we will live to see tomorrow is an illusion. I trust Him today, and I will have to trust Him when the time comes. This doesn't mean I don't prepare. Also, (oh no the soapbox is out!) we have all been put on this planet at this moment in time for a purpose! We were made for this day! Every moment in our lives has prepared us for this! Rise to the occasion! Live! Learn! Survive! Go Doomers Go! Shine a light in the darkness. & when this is over we will throw the biggest bash ever seen! Y2K really annoys the insiders, the establishment, the Tri Lats-- because it's the only thing they can't control, & it threatens to cripple or destroy all their controls. They firmly control the mega- banks, global money system, mega-media, all major political parties (on both sides in every nation), & the multi-nationals. But Y2K snuck up on them, & they're mad & scared. They're desperately spending billions to try to "fix" it but they know it can't be totally fixed, perhaps not ever. It will also be a major setback for Big Brother, in all its aspects, from tax collection to bank rule to centralized bureaucracy & monitoring. As a result, the average person will get a lot of unexpected benefits from Y2K. Some are hoping for a worst-case scenario. "However painful, it's a worthwhile cost to regain individual freedom" they say, in essence. Freedom has never been free.

If U don't really feel Y2K is going to be a BIG DEAL, & if therefore it annoys or upsets U to read data reports from people who say it probably IS going to be a big deal, then don't bother to read this article. Skip on to the next one. Mostly, people aren't changing their minds, are decided re Y2K. If U are a new subscriber, U should read this so U see what we consider the critical/updated facts. Unless U get heavy/daily Y2K updated hard data (as we do) then it would be puzzling how U can decide either way--without all the new daily facts. But most people are deciding emotionally, not objectively, not factually. That's their option, even if subconscious. So, read on or not, as U choose.

For those few who are still reading (:-), here's the latest: Many are comforted to hear that govt & biz have Y2K "contingency plans." Instead, that glib phrase should scare them. Think about it! If all govt depts, banks, biz, military, airports, hospitals who claim they are Y2K- compliant (as most now claim) were really bug-resistant, why would they need vast contingency plans? "Contingency" isn't just a throwaway word; it means something, ie, what we'll do if our individual company/bureau/system breaks down.

They're spending massive money on contingency plans, which means they've little confidence in their claims they're fully Y2K- compliant. Some have thrown in the towel, admit they can't get compliant in time, & will rely mainly on contingency plans. At least they're honest. That can't be said for the blowhard bluffers who are hoping to con people they're foolproof. Fools, yes. Foolproof: unlikely. Only a minority submit to audits of their repair/test/compliance claims.

Many insiders admit they're far behind schedule & will be on a "fix- on-fault" basis in 2000, ie they'll fix/repair embedded chip/computer/system breakdowns if/as they occur. That means after trouble. The catch is: how do they get back up if the whole system is down? Bottom line: the world is one big web of contingency plans & fix-on-fault. Nobody is 100% safe/compliant, because it's impossible to attain. And that is fact, spoken by the world's leading engineering group. US Senate Y2K Report: "Y2K is not going to be just another 'bump in the road.' No, it's going to be one of the most serious & potentially devastating events the US has ever encountered." Govts tend to soft-pedal bad news, so that statement should be a wake-up call to many. Turn up your hearing aid!

The BIS (Bank for Int'l Settlements, Basel, Switzerland) is the central bank for all other central banks. Their Y2K view is not cheerful. In a fat report they say "some problems will be missed; new problems will be inadvertently introduced via the remediation process; even the best test programs may not detect all potential errors; uncertainty will remain up to & after Jan 1. In other words, it is inevitable there will be Y2K disruption, athough it's not possible to predict how serious or widespread this disruption will be."

So there U have it. Central banks will go into 2000 not knowing if these systems are fixed. They know most are not fixed, worldwide. Compare BIS language to your local bank's PR rubbish. The BIS report goes on in great detail. If U read it all U lose any shred of optimism. The general threat is a breakdown of the inter-bank payments system. And once down, how to get it back up? BIS says: Y2K is "unlike any other disruption problem where identical backup sites can be activated. But any uncorrected Y2K problem is likely to affect both sites so the backup would not be a contingency."

It gets worse. BIS, who says what neither private banks nor govt banks dare to say, reveals: "The inability of a major payment & settlement system to function smoothly, or have procedures for isolating problems, will intensify uncertainty/concern. In the extreme case, this could have repercussions throughout the global & domestic systems." Conclusion: the world economy is at acute risk. This is not some "doom/gloom" offbeat writer's view; it's the bluest of the blue chip banks. If your hair hasn't turned grey so far, read the following:

The BIS advises banks to get the home phone numbers of regulators & govt officials so they can be contacted at night or on weekends to discuss the prudence of "closing markets & declaring an emergency financial bank holiday." This is scarier than any Y2K newsletter writer (except Gary North) has dared to say. And it's the real thing! U see, if banks go down, there can be no stock/bond/property mkt, or any other mkt, except black mkts of course, using cash. And all this is separate from equal risks from no power, oil, water, & no phones/fax/e-mail. U don't like this? Does that mean it can't happen? Or can it happen even if U don't like it? Try to separate wish from reality. Author Dr.Edward Yardeni, chief economist/global investmnt strategist at Deutsche Banc-Alex Brown has come back from Y2K retirement & says: "Y2K summary: Most have eyes wide shut....My prediction for a global recession in 2000, at 70% odds remains...Stock mkt down 10-30% (that's 1-3000 DJIA pts). Recession major causes: breakdown in just-in-time manufacturing system, & in global oil industry. Y2K could cause another energy crisis." (I'm virtually sure of it--HS)

EY notes Y2K press coverage is childish, reports the good news press releases, make no comment, ask no questions. "Some frame Y2K as an all-or-nothing story. Either planes fall out of sky or nothing happens. None consider in between. Anyone who talks in between is lumped into the doomsday category & dismissed as far-fetched..Public is led to believe the casual assurances of the few means everyone will be ready. EY says: "Y2K will turn out to be the greatest story never told--- properly." Reporters squeeze answers out of politicians thought to be in hanky-panky, but never ask ONE question about any Y2K report by anyone in banks/govt/biz.

Jacquelyn Williams-Bridgers, US Inspector General,testified in Senate: Half of 161 nations assessed are reported at medium-to high- risk re Y2K failures in telecommunications, energy &/or transport. Her strong conclusion: "The global community is likely to experience varying degrees of Y2K-related failures in every sector, in every region, & at every economic level. The risk of disruption will likely extend to int'l trade, where a breakdown in any part of the global supply chain would have a serious impact on the US & world economies." Now, tell me dear readers, WHY doesn't TV & the press tell U this? My answer: the banks won't let them. Maybe U have a different answer?

As I reported before, the US State Dept will issue Y2K travel advice in Sept. 3 cheers to USSD for integrity in this regard. But it will shock a lot of people. The penny will finally drop. US govt Y2K topdog Koskinen says the US is considering evacuating US citizens from nations with widespread Y2K failures. Each ambassador will make that decision. More than a penny is dropping now. More like a silver dollar. I've only scratched the surface of all there is to report. What bothers me most is the nuclear power plant risks, a global risk, at least in the northern hemisphere. But I can't cover it all. And most people don't even want to hear it.

I'm optimistic that Y2K will paralyze most tax collecting computer systems to such an extent that govts will quickly switch from the income tax to a sales tax (the only fair system), which isn't computer complex & will allow govt to function, ie, bring in money, their 1st concern, 1 of the Holy Trinity of govts (the other 2: power & control).

Every credible Y2K writer accuses govts/banks/biz of lying about the problem & their readiness. But it is left to humourist Art Buchwald to wrap it up in a recent column that concluded: "Fibbing is what Y2K is all about." Many a sober truth is spoken in jest. If U don't take my Y2K advice, take advice from cartoon character Dennis the Menace, who recently told his mother: "We should be stocking up on cookies for Y2K." Make mine ginger snaps! :-)

Spent today buying extra plywood, lag bolts and such, twist-in deep anchors and straps for the boat, Y2K has taken care of the rest.

But this is a really big nasty one, just a tad shy of Andrew strength but larger, and growing. I will be a very busy boy in the morrow. There are times when being self employed has it's advantages, this kind of crap is one of those times.
