National VOAD

A National Convention of Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster Response and Recovery will be held in October at Lake Tahoe, Nevada. These meeting are open to the public.

I attented an Ohio VOAD meeting in Columbus in June this year (missed August's meeting) and we discussed Y2K as well as natural disasters. Funny, the national conference makes no mention of Y2K in the seminars covered. It does address terrorism. (??)

Click on "Seminars" and note the majority of presentations are being made by FEMA.

For those of you unaware, VOADs are forming state level coordination of volunteer organizations (like church groups) that provide help during disasters. Ohio-VOAD is under auspices of Ohio Emergency Management Agency and meets at O-EMA office in Columbus, Ohio.

These organizations will be so overwhelmed in 2000 that they will not matter in a positive way after 2 weeks in 90% of the country. As far as what "help" FEMA is likely to offer with their shelters, a bit of American history is instructive:

DON'T let them take you to the shelters if you can possibly avoid it.
