Put your money where your beliefs are

So I'm offering to wager that nothing major happens next year. I'll put $5,000.00 up to make this wager. I'm wagering that you will be able to do what you do today, live how you live, get money from banks, have lights and heat, etc. just like you get them right now after 01/01/2000. Anybody wiling to stake their beliefs on this wager? No? That's what I thought.

Since the Feds are monitoring this website, this could be illegal gambling. Better check with your lawyer first before taking the bet.

What about the starving kids in Mississippi and Thailand? You don't care about the rioting dgis. The Mohawked Ex-Uppies will steal your bets for not warning them how bad y2k will be. Billions will die. T^his is not a laughing matter.

Bettor,

It's amusing that you're willing to make this offer using a fake e- mail address.

Real offer? No. That's what *I* thought.

I don't have $5000. I spend it on my preparations. Even if it is only a 1% chance that I, or people who count on me, will need these preparations, you might agree that the money was better spent on this modest insurance, rather than on a bet with you. Even if you don't agree, my grandchildren do.

Gambling is legal in Texas. Give us more details, I'm interested in your bet. My biggest question is the date. Most of the major changes you will experience will not occur on 01/01/2000. So, what is your cut off date?

Thats a bad bet, if the (shtf) next year you wont be around for me to collect...---...

It is unlawful to gamble in Hawaii...

But I do put my money where my mouth is, by preparing!

Sounds like shouting in the dark. It is what my husband is doing. Mad about the possibility that something may mess up his daily routine or Golf game. Look at the horror that goes on in other countries, what makes us think we are exempt? By the way, it is spelled, "willing". Nana

You don't have to decide that you'll be ill next year before deciding to have health insurance...

Life is filled with risk and surprising outcomes. That is why we pay insurance premiums to cover improbable, but not impossible surprises that can damage our health, homes, cars, and businesses. Every such situation requires a personal assessment. Should your car insurance include a collision rider? If not, you can reduce your current out-of-pocket expense. How risk averse are you?

Right now, people are attempting to assess Y2K risk.

Of course the address is faked. Gosh you're quick!! :) The point was to get a response and it worked. Each response either worried about the legality or chastised me for not "doing the right thing."

The whole point here was to point out how uptight everyone is about this issue. Everybody seemed so quick to justify their preps or viewpoint. I all did was ask are you really serious.

Loved the responses. mohawked yuppies was great. Only thing is, those wussies wouldn't be a threat to anyone except themselves.

My email address is not fake - and of course the doomers as they are fondly called are serious. Have you got any idea on how many thousands of dollars a doomer spends on preps? Don't you think that makes them serious enough? This ploy of yours was nothing more then an ego trip. If you can't read the obvious writing on the wall that these doomers are serious by the fact that they have spent a significant portion of the time, money and effort on preps - your just plain dense! Should they take a bet from someone who won't bother to reveal his identity, someone who just wants to chide them for their provable seriousness? It you sir, who are not serious, your actions speak louder then your empty words.

better,

How many days out of the year do you think we will be able to continue to do everything we do now? This doesn't mean we would be required to go to a different bank or store than we usually do does it?

I MIGHT be interested if the eval date were after 10/31/2000.

Hey you're on.

I have $5,000.

Let's both put up $5,000 with Ed Yourdon... he can be trusted.

-- Andy (2000EOD@prodigy.net), September 11, 1999.

Careful Andy, make sure you get the rules before you agree to it. He still hasn't answered my question. If your bank or store is closed, he is going to say, "well you could go to that other bank that is open 50 miles away". If your power goes out he will say, "you can start a fire, that will give you heat and light".

-- @ (@@@.@), September 11, 1999.

Weeellll, the $5000 will be in 20 1oz gold eagles, I'm sure Ed can find somewhere to store 40 eagles on his property...

-- Andy (2000EOD@prodigy.net), September 11, 1999.

Andy, would you trust Mike Adams with your money? :-)

-- Mikey's Shill (y2k@news.tire), September 11, 1999.

Andy,

According to some predictions, you should only need ONE 1oz eagle by this time next year right? Ed should have no problem hiding one of those but I bet the bet will be in GREENBACKS.

What kind of odds are you offering, bettor?

Sure. Put your 5000 US FRN (aka cash) in escrow here in Anchorage, Alaska; I'll do likewise. We settle at Point Woronzoff, on the winter solstice, December 21, 2000 (if you can get here). Put up or shut up.

I am spending about $60,000--which includes rent for a house while paying my rent here in NYC--that I wouldn't have spent if it weren't for Y2K. Am I putting my money where my beliefs are? Yes, obviously. I don't need to **ck (not the word you think) around with some demeaning debunker to back up my beliefs.

-- Mara Wayne (MaraWayne@aol.com), September 11, 1999.

Don't take the bet Andy. Its just not a smart bet to make. If nothing happens you're out $5,000 If TSHTF you won't be able to collect. Either way you lose. Don't take the bet.
