I wonder, does anyone out there think that the government is beginning to believe it's own spin? They give people the 3-day snow storm routine, and then instead of preparing for worse, they start buying into their own hype? ALSO, is it my imagination, or is all news coverage, not just Y2K, beginning to sound less and less informed? It's as if no one is doing any reporting any more, let alone investigative reporting.

Did he really say 10 days for Miami?. I guess if we take the recommended number of 10 days and multiply it by common sense (5) I guess Miami is toast.

I read into this that Kosky meant the Floridians were capable of preparing for a 10 day storm because of their experience with hurricanes. It is with this illogic that he recommends that they prepare for 10 days!

Kinda like relative preparation rather than absolute preparation. So, since there is never a storm in San Diego, following Kosky's logic, they have no experience with storms and should not prepare for y2k!!!

I believe Koski got his "10 days for Miami" riff from the Red Cross. A few weeks ago, I was looking at the Red Cross Y2K preparedness page. The organization was holding preparedness meetings in different cities (not sure if they were public or not), and telling people at each location to prepare for the length of time which offers the greatest comfort level. On their website they reported that Miami officials were most comfortable with the 10 day preparedness scenario because of their experiences with Andrew. That hurricane REALLY caught people off guard. They are now a little gun shy and don't want a repeat.
