Three day snowstorm in Atlanta

Here I go again.

I live in the Atlanta area and have been thinking on this "Three Day Snowstorm" advice the Government is giving. Have they ever seen what goes on here during a real snowstorm? We get 1/4 inch of snow and the city shuts down. This snow lasts usually 1 morning and maybe 1/2 the afternoon. Yet the night before everybody and their brother goes to the store and buys all the bread and milk that they can. It happens like clockwork. Even though the snow only lasts 3/4 of a day. If this is what happens in real life what will happen IF y2k hits the south hard??

Yes, the 3 day analogy. I love the idea that anything can be fixed in 3 days. What did Kosky say the other day, "Y2k compliant companies who experience problems could fix them in 3 days", something close to that. What does that mean, non-compliant companies will take MUCH longer to fix problems?.

We too shut down the whole place with a few inches of snow. Companies let out early or schools dont open if snow of more than a few inches threaten.

One of the scenarios that the Naval War College is "Ice Storm" and defines it as:

"..a widespread and sustained period of Y2k-induced network failures that begin on or about 1 January 2000 and unfolds with great rapidity. This model envisions the onset of the Y2k event as an all-at-once assault that causes serious disruptions throughout a nations economic system, ultimately disabling most--if not all-- essential network infrastructures. In this instance, Y2k turns out to be a highly interrelated sequence of network failures that have a profoundly detrimental impact on the overall functioning of society. The key question is 'What is the recovery time?'".....

So kids, when Kosky and crew start using the term ICE STORM rather than hurricane or snow storm you gotta wonder why the difference in terms and if they are dropping clues to the REAL severity it COULD cause.

Another question overlooked...Has anyone realized what happens if there IS a 3 day storm? Think about it (...the weather as of late has been a mite squirrelly as of late,) Kosky and the boys in charge are well and truely ****ed if we happen to have a nice big kick ass blizzard over New Year weekend. How will all those Fix on Failures get fixed if evvabody is locked down snowed/iced/frozen under? Man, I'll be throwing another log in the stove and laughing my warm butt clean off....

Lets see here...

To prep for a three day storm I go down to the store on New Years eve 12/31/99 and buy Bread, Milk, &meat. All of which I will store in my refridgerator which has no electricty. I will buy all of the batteries and candles. I will hoard this stuff and hit the guy infront of me for taking MY STUFF.

This sounds like a plan to me!

seen it all: My impression is that the Y2K agenda of the Naval War College is very different from that of Koskinen's office. The Navy is willing to look at all the possibilities in public.

The analogy is all wrong here. How long does it take to recover from a 30 second earthquake? Depends on the severity. That's what's at issue.

Three days? Perhaps its about the time that fresh milk will take to spoil when the power's out...

We get snowed in almost every year here in Indiana, at least a day sometimes 3 days because of our location. I'm Glad preparing is fun for us, just tripling our preps this year. Hope things don't go infomagic, but with the Russians and Chinese talking like they are it could be very bad ):

On the East Coast, and across the Gulf Coast, they always wait until the last 24 hours to get ready for hurricane - the South (other than the 40% who are already getting ready, won't do anything until the last minute.

'Cause a "three day winter storm" down here is meaningless - they don't happen. 1/4" snowfalls, even 2" snowfalls are NOT cause for panic buying....the mere mention of ANY threat of ANY snow at all is a cause for panic buying....

Robert:

Isn't it the truth??

As a 12 year resident of Nashville, TN, we did get some snow now and then, but the rumour of snow or ice was enough......
