Does GI = realist?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I apologize for the andy ray style right off the bat...

I have been GI for a little over 2 years, and after all the iterations, I believe I am as ready as I am going to get. All bases are covered as much as the tight financial situation will allow. Anyway, everyone I have ever talked to that was also GI, or became GI with our conversation, was a realist, as I am.

It took awhile to figure out what the difference was between realism and pessimism. I have been called pessimistic for years, but hey, a pessimist is never disappointed...

Does this ring a bell with some of the others here who obviously have the same belief structure I do?

"The problem is a Y2000 issue, not y1999."

"Y2K may only be a beginning"

"Damn, did you see how big that muley was???"

"1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2"

"Does the term 'useless eaters' mean anything to you?"

"Lt Commander Montgomery Scott is my hero"

By now everyone reading this is probably either laughing at this idiot, yacking nonsense, or have gone off to watch the boob tube. But hey, cyberspace is free speech (yeah right).

So, any realist's in this bunch? I know Andy is one, as well as Shakey...

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

chasin' the ball...

Care to elaborate on what the above means, Dog ?.

Dog,

What!!!------Are you in heat!!!

Jeez I always thought you were a pit bull, but lately so many are becoming so comfortable with the community here that we're all becoming like one big DYSFUNTIONAL family, I love it!! And this is from the guy that posted "how do I kill myself?

I'm such a freakin realist, it hurts. But I wouldn't say I'm pessimistic, rather, I'm acceptimistic.

Huh,

A muley is a slang term for muledeer. I knew someone would have to ask... I bet Lee and Shakey knew what I was talking about.

Mr Butts,

I am 100% mutt. And oh, by the way, I have NEVER posted ANYTHING regarding "how to kill myself"... must of been some other dog... Suicide is NOT part of my rep.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hell, I figured it's Friday, not much happening, major department meeting here at work, so no one is around. My work here is done for the week, so I have a few hours to kill before I get to go home. I don't post new questions very often, so... there it is.

Dog

I would say no. Some GI post some very unrealistic things here. One of the chief things you need to GI is to be able to think beyond the rest of the herd. This may mean that you are a student of history and can see that societies can quickly be lulled in to a feeling that things will always be as good as they are now. It just takes forty or fifty years. Or it could mean that you are very logical, have an understanding of how complex and interconnected our socio-economic infrastruture is and have deduced that there is a chance of critical failures. You could just be the careful type and make preperations in any case. Or you could be the sort who jump on to any wacky theory that comes along like alien visitors, atlantis, real vampires and ghosts, books by Velokofski (sp?), and other fantastic sounding theories. Why not jump on the Y2K awareness band wagon too?

So I don't think that GI necessarily means realist. I think it does mean that for whatever reason one is willing to think out side the box, if that is the proper term. The following statements illustrate my thinking on this.

DGI (or pollies) = normal.

Normal = dead if living on the slopes of mount St. Helens. Or Vesuvius.

And ultimately, the Realist becomes the *optimist* because he/she believes in Life After The Troubles and has made appropriate provisions for that eventuality.

The pendulum *always* swings to its opposite.

ROOF,YIP, YAP, rooff rooofff.

GI=Realist = May smell the smoke and get out of the theater before the alarm goes off.

Haven't liked crowds since I was in college and got squezzed up against the doors of an auditorium by a bunch of wasted Dead Heads pushing to get out of the cold in Iowa City winter and into the nice warm (smoke filled) room. Took me days to recover. Crowds have a way of stampeding and killing things. I think the GI's will at least not have to fight it out at the last minutes at the 7-11 for the last jug of water....

Things will get worse before they get better......

An Optimist is one that hopes and expects the best... A Pessimist is one that hopes and expects the worst... A Realist is one that hopes for the best and expects the worst which is where I'm hanging.

Susan,

Yes, you hit the nail on the head! And you will find most of the 'down-to-earth' folks on this forum, are the 'realist' camp.

Luna,

How very true, you don't realize how true that statement is, or will be. Right now I am praying for minimal disturbances 010100, BUT, if not, oh well, plan B... Have a plan B... lets be realistic now... ; )

Helium,

I cannot stand crowds. I will get physically ill if there are LOTS of people crowded around me for any length of time. I thought helium was supposed to be 'light'. You have written some pretty 'heavy' threads here lately.

This old dog is getting ready to go home. I have had my fun today, on a rare occasion. I lurk more than I post anymore. But I have to get those jabs in every once in awhile so everyone knows the Dog is still hanging around, and that I am not a stray. I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I can still cut with the best of them.

Good Evening!!!!

Susan, read "Winning Through Intimidation" by Robert Ringer. Besides your correct interpretation of realist, you'll find how to deal with the proctologists of life, very interesting reading...not mainstream.
