According to its website, Portuguese Electricity (EDP) began its preparations for Year 2000 in March 1997 and "as a result of huge effort in all areas.is almost fully prepared for year 2000..only a small number of problems still being solved which will be concluded by October 1999".

The website gives details of the project structure and who has held responsibility. It explains the steps taken and the milestones that were set. "The EDP 2000 Certification System was created with the goal of assuring an effective and exhaustive preparation of all components, industrial sites and EDP companies". Every item that could be sensitive to Y2K problems had to have "written certification signed by the person responsible for that item". In addition "every industrial site (power plant, substation etc) and company had to be certified "by top managers and board members after a 2000 certification audit". In addition contingency plans are being prepared.

EDP plans to set up a National Control Centre for the actual rollover period, which will also cover the leap-year period. The website notes plans to have reduced power in connections with Span, production geographically dispersed and "other measures to improve the safety of the network". www.edt.pt
