9-9-99 and nothing happened. Geee Whiz...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Got up early this morning and turned on the TV. Ahh.. Kristy Kahanek the weather BABE is on.... Great way to start of my day. Then they go back to the main news anchor.

Anchor: Yes, Ladies and Gentleman we are still here. The Y2K computerbug has not shut us down. People were concerned that the digits 9-9-99 would shut down computer systems due to the computers thinking it is an end of program date.

At this point I am starring wild eyed at the tv. WHAT..?? The world is not going to end..??? uhmnnn... Who said it would..? Computers THINK...??? Have I been asleep for 30 years...??? Have we made those kind of advances in the computer industry that they now think on their own....???

Then the newsstation goes on to show a picture of a powerplant of TXU. "See, to prove to you all that this is real we are having a life picture of the main control room." then they go back to the newsanchor and he says something about y2k being a big non-event due to the fact that all the planes are still flying and no problems have been reported to the news station.

Geee I have to take a whiz now... (shaking head) comming back out from the bathroom. Ahhhh there is Kristy again... Weather is going to be only 95 today..?? Finally cooling down.. huh..?

Well, it's a GREAT DAY to go to work....

If you are male and live in Dallas, You KNOW who Kristy is

STFrancis,

Do you ever get the feeling the whole thing is orchestrated?

*Sigh*

Sorry... wrong terminology. Do you ever get the feeling your perceptions are being "managed?"

I'm not surprised. I figured this would happen. Anybody knowledgeable knew that the 9s problem was just an old programmer's tale (sort of like old wives tail). They hyped it up as the perfect Y2K strawman. See, everything is ok. Go back to sleep. Y2K will be a non event. Don't take your money out of the bank.

Baaaaaah!

Nothing happened, other than a huge natural gas explosion in Russia...

-- Shimrod (shimrod@lycosmail.com), September 09, 1999.

Diane,

No kidding... Go back to sleep... Move along... Move along...

Natural Gas Explosion...?? Where in russia..? Only heard about that apartment building that killed 20, and buried 50. They are suspecting terrorist with that one... Was there another one...?

-- STFrancis (STFrancis@heaven.com), September 09, 1999.

Diane,

I tend to agree with you that it seems that this whole 9999 thing is totally orchestrated. Woke up this morning and heard the same thing on both TV and radio... the pollies are having a good day today... spin spin spin.. very few experts have ever claimed 9999 was going to cause severe problems... I think I want to go back to sleep!!!! it feels better that way

-- michael (michael813@yahoo.com), September 09, 1999.

Where is Russia?

-- Lost in america (lost@y2k.com), September 09, 1999.

Gawd, 9/9/99 has nothing to do with Y2k. Is it even comparable? No. It was an "end of file, delete" command. That's it.

Diane: you are right, we are being managed and I'm sick to death of being managed.

-- mar (derigueur2@aol.com), September 09, 1999.

Troll alert. I and many others have said 1999-09-09 is/was almost certain to be a non-event.

OTH, 2000-01-01 and on into Y2K could be MAJOR.

Don't pay attention to the pollies "9/9/99 no big deal so Y2K won't be."

-- vbProg (vbProg@MicrosoftAndIntelSuck.com), September 09, 1999.

mar: i completly agree

vbprog: Are you calling me a troll...?? IF so... READ the post...

-- STFrancis (STFrancis@heaven.com), September 09, 1999.

STFrancis,

No, I think VB is saying that the trolls in general will have a field day today.

It ain't Y2K yet. Tick... Tock... <:00=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), September 09, 1999.

Yes, it became apparent in the last few months that the 9's problem was no problem at all...But as far as everyone saying that it was used as a Strawman by the Govnt and Industry is not being entirely truthful. Several of the well known Y2k experts (Ed Yourdon, et al) were listing it as a harbinger of things to come - I am just glad that none of "trigger" dates have really panned out.

-- william holst (w_holst@hotmail.com), September 09, 1999.

Here's the message they're sending out to the media from the Bonneville Power Administration:

"If the first big dress rehearsal is any indication, the Y2K bug may be no big deal."

And that is a VERY big IF. How can the 9999 be compared to 2000? Typing in 9999 happens once in a blue moon, but typing in 2000 is going to happen every day next year.

IDIOTS!!!

Yes. Just another tricky day (as The Who put it)...

...and no social crisis.

sigh,

Well, I guess this means we won't have empty shelves this week while grocery shopping. Could be good news, I guess.

STFrancis:

I don't know who Kristy is, but I'm getting a better grasp of truly brainwashed DGI idiots.

Today at the factory I had three DGIs surprise me with this 09/09/99 media propaganda.

The first surprise: a saleswoman told me she woke up alive and well today, so Y2K was no big deal.

My reaction was "Huh? Why are you saying that?"

She replied that 09/09/99 caused no problems.

So? What's the connection? She and her husband heard this on television.

The second surprise: a draftsman came into my work center and starting getting really animated. "It's 09/09/99" he proclaimed, looking at his watch and overacting (poorly).

He ranted a bit longer about nothing happening on 09/09/09 and concluded by stating confidently that Y2K would also be a non-event.

I told him that 09/09/99 and Y2K were different.

In his mind he is already convinced Y2K will be a BITR. Well, wasn't it today?

The third surprise: the FedEx courier told me that the Stock Market did not crash.

I responded, "Does this have to do with 09/09/99?"

He replied, "Yes."

I told him the stock market would not crash because of 09/09/99.

His initial remark was to teach me that I'm a naysayer who over reacts to Y2K.

I wonder about these three DGIs. They are doing absolutely NO PREPARING.

What bothered me was that they all acted very smug and smirked a great deal during their boasting.

Cheap entertainment. Really cheap.

Get used to it Randolph. It is going to be much worse for the tinfoil sect in January of 2000.

-- Super Polly (Fu_Q_y2kfreaks@hotmail.com), September 14, 1999.

Super Polly,

I wouldn't be so sure about that if I were you. Even if the U.S. manages to avoid major problems in January, the news coverage of the international situation could be substantial:

-- Linkmeister (link@librarian.edu), September 14, 1999.

for the umpteenth time dates are stored on file as 09/09/1999 or 09/09/99, MM/DD/YYYY or MM/DD/YY in the unlikely event that a date field (rather than a usual key field such as Account Number) is checked for End of File condition i.e. = 999999, the test would fail anyway. The program would continue to process. Dates are sometimes printed as 9/9/99 since the leading zero is edited out.

-- dick of the dale (richard.dale@unum.co.uk), September 15, 1999.

Oh, Kevin get a grip. The world has problems right now. It will have problems next year. You y2k freaks just try and make everything tied together with y2k so you can promote your religion. "its all about preping" You dorkwads need to get a life. Didn't you listen to Mutha Nachu when she told you "you are just helping the snakeoil salesmen peddle their BS"? YOU are contributing to FUD, Kevin. YOU are making other people money off of fear sales. Unless; you are getting a kickback?

I know this may sound silly, but are you a shill for Mike Adams or maybe EY himself? WHy are you so adamant that y2k will be so bad, when there is NO PROOF, NO DATA, that backs up the assumption?

-- Super Polly (Fu_Q_y2kfreaks@hotmail.com), September 15, 1999.

Super Polly,

What planet are you from? EVERYONE is expecting Y2K problems. Even the MOST OPTIMISTIC are saying to prepare for 3 to 7 days of "disruptions." Here, in the most "ready" country of all. OPEN YOUR EYES!

Yea, I know you won't. You'll ignore the warnings. You're just another polly. SUPER POLLY. You're hopeless. Good luck.

Tick... Tock... <:00=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), September 15, 1999.

Yeah, sysyman go blow your horn. I don't give a shit what you prepare for, spend away!

I stand by my prediction of a BIG fat ZERO on the relative to reality scale when it comes to y2k. Zippo, bud. Naughta. Zilch. Of course the Tinfoil Sect will connect donut supply shortages with .gov coverup and that kind of bullshit, but it doesn't affect me. So go ahead, follow the lunatics like North, Lord, and the rest. Make a fool of yourself. Just don't get pissed off at me when I point out how WRONG *ALL* the tinfoilers were next year.

I notice Kevin never answered my shill question. I was *mostly* kidding when I asked it, but his silence gives me pause. hmmm.

-- Super Polly (Fu_Q_y2kfreaks@hotmail.com), September 15, 1999.

typo. that should read "Sysman"

-- Super Polly (Fu_Q_y2kfreaks@hotmail.com), September 15, 1999.

St. Francis -- Did you read the other posts - PRIOR to 1999-09-09, including those by progtrammers, noting that 1999-09-09 would be minor at worst, likely a non-event, and the reasons therefor, and has nothing to do with 2000-01-01 and on into Y2K? You'r not just a polly -- you are either stupid or ignorant. Which is it? (Or both?)
